I don't have personal experience with a significant other, but I taught students on the spectrum for a long time. I would highly recommend the book The Journal of Best Practices. It's a memoir by a man who was diagnosed with aspergers as an adult, and the book focuses on how this new understanding of his behavior impacted his marriage.
And it was actually his wife who initiated the idea that this might be what was going on. It was the same as you described. After many years of frustration with his behavior, she came across a diagnostic checklist for aspergers and was like, hey my husband has all of these.

My MIL was diagnosed with dementia that is believed to be from Aspergers. She's in her 80s, is from Holland(adult)/Indonesia(birth through adulthood), doesn't speak or understand English completely and never had a doctors visit before coming to the U.S. and wasn't in school past the age of 11.

My husband had always been frustrated believing that it was her not understanding the language. But there were things that to me, someone that didn't grow up with her, noticed that went beyond the language barrier. More of an emotional language disconnect.
Since being diagnosed I think it's easier for my husband to accept that there are things she processes differently and it's not because she doesn't care or doesn't understand, she just cares differently than we do.

I'm here if you ever want to discuss further

Do any of you have a spouse or other close adult who was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome as an adult? If so I'd be interested in knowing the following:
1. When or why did the diagnosis occur?
2. If you or someone other than the AS adult brought up the possibility of AS how did the AS adult initially respond?
3. How did the adult respond to the diagnosis?
4. What, if anything, has the AS adult done to modify his or her behaviors?
5. How has your relationship with the AS adult changed for better or worse?
6. How did you cope with having a marriage (or friend/parent/sibling relationship) with the AS adult?

I've read a lot of the sites out there dedicated to this topic but I'm really looking for personal experience. After several frustrating years of not being able to understand my husband's behavior and actions, lightbulb went off after a conversation with a friend who has a lot of professional experience with teens and adults with AS. DH was diagnosed as a child with ADHD, depression, anxiety, and social anxiety but nothing was every done to address it - and it was the 1980s when what we now understand to be a high functioning individual with autism was just "quirky." But now, it seems that these conditions can coexist or even mask AS.
Any personal experience advice would be greatly appreciated.
