For our 10 year anniversary we’re planning on going to Paris and then the French Alps. In the alps we’re going to stay on Lake Annecy, which looks amazing, and also spend some time in Chamonix.

@karenbme: We just went to Iceland in September and the flight was a bit rough bc I cannot sleep on planes. We got in around 6 am. We wanted to go straight to the Blue Lagoon as I hear that helps with jet lag but the times were all sold out by the time we went to buy tickets. We ended up going to Costco to get a few supplies but I took a short nap in the parking lot. :) I then took a nap in the Airbnb we stayed at and kept moving. I got over it pretty quick. Iceland was the most amazing place I've ever been to. We didn't have the time to go around the entire island but promised we'd go back for our 10 year anniversary in 2.5 years and do it. Seriously breathtaking.

@annem1990: Oof, maybe I’m just old, but that sounds rough. I do fine on next to no sleep, but the older DH gets, the more he needs sleep. Usually on a 7 hour transatlantic flight I can get 4+ hours and DH might get 2 or 3, but we normally arrange for early check in and a nap he first day. Without that he’s a mess.

@karenbme: Yup that’s how our flight was. We rented our car at like 6am and hit the road. We even took a nap in the car at one point. It’s the safest country on earth and so rural it didn’t feel odd.
Were we tired the first day? Yeah. But basically about as much as any other flight to Europe. At least every time I’ve been, we’ve always landing super early in the morning and get little sleep on the plane. When we go trans-Atlantic we just power through the first day (you’re so excited anyways it’s fairly easy), maybe take a nap and go to bed really early that night. Typically we sleep like 11-12hours that night and wake up feeling great.

@annem1990: @lindseykaye: I’m ok with missing out on cheese because I have trouble digesting dairy (and I live in VT where the cheese game is strong) and I’m not a big beer drinker so I’m fine going somewhere with good beer. But whisky is my weakness so Scotland and Kentucky are both off the list (I’m less into Irish whisky for whatever reason).

@annem1990: @pachamama: @charm55: What were your flight situations going to Iceland? It looks like most of the flights from Boston or Montreal leave at ~10pm and get in at 4 or 5am, which seems really difficult, especially with a shorter flight (~5 hours) for sleeping.

@karenbme: I was in Scotland while pregnant (planned before the pregnancy) and it was beautiful and fun and I had an amazing time. And it totally sucked not to enjoy the whiskey or beer if those are things you like already. You’ve got the right thinking to pick somewhere else (Iceland omg!).

Iceland, Iceland, Iceland!!
We went a couple years ago in September. We road tripped the whole island and spent 12 days. We had a blast and you feel like you’re on another planet. We aren’t hikers, but I know you can do a ton of that if you wanted. PM me if you want suggestions. We saw (almost) everything that’s reasonably easy to get to so I can definitely give some tips.

This could be totally irrelevant for you, but when I’m pregnant I don’t want to travel somewhere where I’ll feel like I’m missing out by not drinking. Like I absolutely loved sitting in pubs in Ireland and I would have felt sad to miss out on trying different beers. I’d feel similar in other places in Europe with food too (hello wine and local cheese in France!!). Iceland is definitely not a place you would miss out on that. To be honest, the food and drink kind of sucked  The scenery is what’s the attraction and you can obviously do all of that pregnant!

@Littlebit7: That’s a good point about the alps, and theoretically we could fly to Milan or Venice and train to one of the lakes, and choose mellow or less mellow with the possibility of hiking into Switzerland. I think Maggiore actually spans the border if I’m remembering correctly.

@lamariniere: Thanks for the tip on France. If we did the Pyrenees we’d probably fly to Lyon or Marseilles (there are directs to both from Montreal, which is our closest major airport) and then train from there. I know how busy it gets, which is why we’re planning 6 mos out even with all the uncertainty of TTC. Also, totally agreed the highlands have amazing hiking, but I feel like I like scotch just a little too much to go to Scotland while pregnant and not feel like I’m missing out. 😉

Places I haven’t been, but have been on my list for the last few years are the Scottish highlands and Norway, you could do a lot of hiking in both. I’ve also never been to Iceland, but it sounds amazing.
I would be worried that getting to the Pyrenees would be logistically a bit complicated (and time consuming) since you would probably need fly into a secondary airport and rent a car, it might be a bit much for one week. August is also peak tourist season in Europe, so you are still going to get crowds like you would in the US. If you are going to be in France, I would look at accommodations now. Things fill up very quickly for that period. We’ve been to France for the past 2 summers and are going again this summer and we’ve booked our main vacation accommodation in January each time for August.

@charm55: Ooh, I hadn’t thought of Iceland. There are a bunch of direct flights from Boston, too.

@pachamama: Colorado could be cool, I hadn’t thought of it for summer. I always associate it with snowboarding. Montana is epic, but our last hiking trip was two weeks in Alberta and western Montana. It was almost 2 years ago now, and I would def go back, but want to check out someplace new. Agreed that the south would be awful... DH is born and bred northern New England and breaks a sweat at 75. 🤣

Definitely Iceland!! God that'd be amazing!
What about Maine, Colorado or Montana? What an experience they would be if you're into the outdoors. Anything tropical or in the south would be super hot in August. I know FLa is intolerable then.
So jealous you get to travel!!

Hello all! DH and I are currently trying to decide on a location for a summer vacation and *fingers crossed* babymoon. We've been holding off traveling for a while because of various pregnancy/loss related concerns, but I'm crawling out of my skin and ready to just go for it since you never know what's going to happen. We're looking at mid-late August, and want to go somewhere where we can be active--we're big into hiking and kayaking--but where we'll also be happy if I'm pregnant and would rather sit by a lake/pool or wander through a town. I want to avoid US national parks because while I love them for getting into the back country, I really don't like the chaos and disney-lite vibe around a lot of the towns that host national parks. We're based in the Northeast US, so Europe or west coast are options, but not South Pacific or Asia, since we're only planning 1 week. Obviously if I'm hoping to be ~5 months pregnant, we'd be avoiding zika and countries where we might get travelers' flu. We've been thinking about the following, but would love any suggestions:

Seattle or Vancouver (bonus of visiting friends)
Somewhere in the Alps
Somewhere in the Pyrenees (DH has always wanted to hike across an international border, plus wild ponies!)
Ireland (DH's grandparents on his mom's side were from County Kerry)
