I like the visual of how many days are left until Christmas. Starting at 1, it's too hard to do the math in my head on the fly. :) So I start at 24 and go up the tree. I have one that is shaped like a calendar, and it's pretty obvious you should start from 1, but on the melissa and doug tree one we have, we start at 24 and move up.
