We have a calendar with tiny drawers all the same size; I started doing it last year when girls were 4 and 2, so I'll probably do the same thing this year. The drawers are so small, I do a combination of act of kindness, family activity (they don't know that we'd do these things regardless, haha, but things like decorate gingerbread house, hot chocolate day, go see holiday lights, etc). I try to sprinkle as few treats as possible; both their birthdays are also in Dec so on their birthdays I'll put chocolate in there. Last year I bought these animal erasers (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0797TBNP1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1), they were a hit but a year later most of them are missing parts, etc. I'm probably gonna try to do some small hair clips, stickers, stamps, etc.

Can you do a quarter each day with the kindness tasks? Then at the end they each get a small toy that’s not total crap because they turn in their $5 or whatever it is! We just get the disposable advent calendar from Trader Joe’s - tiny chocolates on each day then toss the empty calendar!

Following. I’m stuck in what to fill our calendar with. My sons are 6 & 1. I’m thinking alphabet magnets for the 1 year old.

In the past I’ve done hot wheels, Thomas mini trains, army men. One year I did a LEGO advent and didn’t use ours.

I like the idea of breaking up a LEGO set, I was thinking of doing this.

We have an advent calendar that I'm planning to fill with a mix of stickers, little plastic "stuff", candy, or slips of paper with an activity for sometime that day. I'm strategically timing the activities (things like watch a movie, decorate cookies, drive around to see Christmas lights, go shopping for the mitten tree/angel tree at church, etc.) for days that I anticipate having time to do that stuff anyway. And I'm also totally ready to shuffle it around as needed of fill in with back-up candy if it starts to feel like more of a to-do list than something fun or meaningful. :)

Random treats and toys for some
Others could be an activity like decorate the tree, bake cookies, go skating etc

We have an advent calendar that has little doors. They’ll compartments range in size from maybe fitting a hot wheels car to a box of crayons? We usually fill it with a mix of small treats and usually plastic crap. We’ve also done 25 days of kindness and the Christmas story mixed in with those treats. That was fine and the kids liked them, but (understandably) weren’t all that interested in those when plastic junk or candy was in them. Last year we bought a couple advent LEGO sets (one was Star Wars and one was a playmobil Christmas scene). Those were fun, but it seemed silly to take the components out of their own calendar just to use ours.

Here are some options:
1) continue to fill with coins/treats/plastic crap
2) take a full LEGO set and give them a little bit every day
3) try 25 days of kindness again, but then I’m not sure they’d be excited without something else in there and it might just be more things I’m supposed to do during the already crazy Christmas season. So what else could go in the boxes?
4) something else entirely?

I do really like the calendar and would like to continue to use it, I just haven’t figured out the best way to do it. Boys are 4 and 7 (DD is 6 months).
