@Trailmix: I know we have another thread now, but I thought I would just respond on here before I hop over there :)

So sorry to hear that the HSG was unpleasant for you. I'm not looking forward to it myself. I'm glad that they were able to get the information that they needed from it and you didn't have to go through it again.

I know it must be so hard to deal with a diagnosis, but also good to have some answers. Glad to hear you're able to move into the next steps now and wish you the best moving forward. Forward motion is good :)

@spaniellove: Thanks! I'll definitely share my experience on here to tap in to the knowledge and support. It really does help to feel less alone in this process. And talking through the computer seems to be much easier than in person...probably because anyone who asks me anything about this process immediately witnesses waterworks!

@spaniellove: We chose to go to the further clinic with good numbers and recommended by the CF clinic. I am glad we did. We had to stay there for 2 weeks but while we stimmed I had a blood test every single morning. We changed doses every night and we last minute triggered. If we weren't there to get the testing every day, we would have had to cancel the cycle as I was getting to high. So, I'm really glad we went the way we did.

So much great advice, I'm still processing it all!

@Modern Daisy: I'm so sorry the process is taking so long! Are they explaining to you why they want to do more testing and when they anticipate that it'll end?

@MerryC: I didn't realize I could ask about these things right off the bat, but yeah, I would love to find out the specifics.

@GreenThumb: My gosh I am really hoping this cycle works out for you! That is so much to go through.

@sweetooth: Hope the next week goes by quickly for you and you get a lot out of the appointment. You'll have to let us know how it goes!

@alison206: Thanks so much :)

@tequiero21: I think we'd have to do ICSI because of MFI. In terms of the meds, I'm not supposed to take anything containing estrogen so no BCP. So glad you brought up the issue of refunds if OHSS happened, because I've been wondering what would happen if the cycle was canceled for various reasons but would have been too chicken to ask!

After reading everyone's post I thought again about the clinic we're meeting with, and I started wondering...would you rather go with a clinic 10 minutes from home that had average results or would you rather travel a couple hours to a clinic that had better numbers? (And btw, I'm having a hard time wading through all the numbers.)

It sounds like there's a lot of interest in a general infertility (and infertility veterans) thread! We should start one!

@Trailmix: i'm not sure that it necessarily gets ignored. maybe just that many of us haven't really experienced certain things? for example, i was diagnosed with "unexplained infertility"... right. lol what the heck does that mean. so i can't really give any advice re: pcos or i'm not even sure what mfi is, etc. also, even though i'm on here alot, i don't even see most of the infertility posts! they get moved down so quickly i usually only scroll thru the first 2 pages of the boards. maybe people should "bump" the pages! =) and i don't look for specific topics, unless i'm going through certain things, like nap training and breastfeeding, etc.

good luck with your injectables! $85 for your meds and $10k for ivf - that's pretty good, nice! that's over 50%! we paid about $600 for all our ivf meds. and about $3,000 for our ivf.

@spaniellove Well, I'm glad you started this thread, hopefully it can be a means of support for those of us on HB who are going through fertility treatments. Or maybe we should start a separate one?

@daniellemybelle I've been pretty surprised by the way the infertility posts are basically ignored by most of the community here. Not from personal experience bc I've actually never posted about my own issues specifically but just from when others have posted. For example, this thread took over a day to get a response, which doesn't really happen with most other posts...it does suck bc it is an awful experience and to be ignored on top of it definitely is hard so THANKS so much for coming over, expressing your sympathy, that means a lot, I think :)

@moderndaisy Thanks for the support, so sorry it's taking you so long to get all the tests done. The problem is everything is cycle-day sensitive, so if you miss something for some reason, you have to wait until the next cycle, right? So frustrating! I hope Clomid does the job for you!

@Merryc you're probably right, there's more IVF and IUI-ers than I realized but I've read the entire 2 pages of infertility posts and it just seems like that area is kinda ignored here...maybe the more we talk about it, the more acknowledgment we'll get? Thanks for sharing your words of advice....

@grace Thanks, dear. It's been a pretty devastating couple of weeks, more details on my diagnosis below...I know you just saw your GYN for the first time and that you will probably be going to a fertility clinic, how are you feeling about everything?

@Greenthumb I've been rooting for you since your first IVF, really hope this second time around works!! Thanks for your support and advice...

@sweetooth Well, the HSG was a bit of a disaster(I passed out cold, yikes!) but from the few photos the dr got, tubes seem to be clear. The diagnosis came from Day 2/3 blood tests of my FSH and AMH levels. My FSH was really, really high (20.8 when it should be around 6) and my AMH was quite low (.3 when it should be at least at 1)...so basically my hormones are working too hard to produce crappy eggs. So the dr recommended we do an injectables + IUI this cycle. It was pretty hard to hear, have been feeling pretty devastated for the last week or so ever since I found out.

@Alison206 Thanks for the support, it really means a lot!

Whooof, that was a monster of a response post but it is so good to know I'm not alone in what I'm going through and that there are others here on HB who get it. I'm definitely interested in hearing more about eveyrone's diagnoses and treatments!

And, for those interested, my insurance covers everything up to IVF and 10,000 for IVF, which unfortunately won't even cover 1 cycle. But my first round of meds (4 Gonal F pens, 1 Ovidrel and 2 boxes of progesterone supplements) only cost $85 so right now, I am grateful for my insurance company!

i don't really have much more to add than what all the ladies above mentioned. we did 3 cycles of clomid + iui, all negative results. next step was either injectables or ivf, we chose ivf, since injectables, you have to take all these shots (like ivf) but chances are slimmer and you don't get to keep the eggs you harvested. we were lucky and our insurance paid for 80% of all costs. we didn't spend enough to claim it on our taxes.

some clinics have a guarantee program. the cost is higher, but you get a few tries (3, i think), and if you don't get pregnant, they refund you all costs. we didn't go that route because we were only going to do 1 cycle of ivf. if that didn't pan out, we would have gone the adoption route.

like @GreenThumb mentioned, you have to be careful of hyperstimulation. if you are hyperstimulated, they won't proceed with the cycle. i know i was close. but luckily, i leveled out and was able to proceed. i'd want to know what the clinic would do in that situation. would they refund you some money? give you another free or discounted cycle? that is not something i was even aware of, i think. maybe i was aware, can't remember lol but i didn't ask what happens with costs if i were to have gotten hyperstimulated.

i had 19 eggs retrieved; 8 fertilized. we put in 2, froze 6. you should ask what's the max # of eggs they are willing to put in. our clinic liked 1 to 2, max. unless you had some major problems. they divided the eggs in half - half got fertilized by icsi, the other half, just normal ivf. i believe the 2 they used were done by icsi. just depends on how good the eggs looked. we did day 3 transfer. they also provided picture of the embryos they transferred.

you should ask what the schedule would be for meds and egg retrieval, transfer, etc. so you're comfy with the whole procedure. beware: you will be getting lots and lots of shots. it does get painful, but not unbearable.

not sure what you mean by "meds are contraindicated with my health issues" but that's something you should definitely mention to your RE.

there are definitely a group of us that have gone through infertility treatments, feel free to contact me with any questions and i'll try to answer as best as i can.

good luck!!!!

@Trailmix: I've been curious about how you're doing. I know you had an HSG scheduled back at the beginning of the month. How did the diagnosis of Diminished Ovarian Reserve come to be? I'm not so familiar with that. (only share what you want...I'm not prying)

I have my first RE appointment in about a week, so I don't have anything to offer at this point but support. I do appreciate the sharing of knowledge and feelings that goes on here at HB, and hope that you find the support you need. Infertility is hard, and it sucks.

This is a really scattered post because I have so much to say, but here goes...

@trailmix: I'm really sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I also know where you are coming from about HB! One of the reasons I've been on and off HB since TTC a year ago is because I feel like so few women can relate to my struggles. I still check in on here (and am posted on the Oct POAS thread) just so I can feel a little normal about the process. I actually also post on an infertility forum because it is nice to have folks who have already been through it or are going through it at the same time as me. One thing I do have to say is that when I got my BFN after my first IVF, the HB ladies were wonderful and quick to give their support, but you guys already know that:).

I agree with @mrs green grass about the blog community being a wonderful support, too. Although I am not much of a commenter and don't have a blog myself, I am a big blog reader, and knowing that I am not the only one out there dealing with IF really helps.

@spaniellove: I also got my fertility meds, syringes, antibiotics, pain meds covered (for the most part) because I have separate prescription insurance from my health insurance. This was a total surprise to me, but certainly a happy one in the scheme of things.

Also, I ended up developing Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) from my fresh IVF stimulation medications. While it meant that I developed a lot of eggs, my estrogen levels were very high (even with a reduction in med dosage more than once) which likely impacted my success. I was also pretty sick after my transfer (1 embryo - July 1). So I waited a full med-free cycle before starting in on FET (which is about a two-month process with my clinic). Which brings us to Oct 4 for FET! I have 10 frozen embryos from my fresh cycle which sounds like a lot, but I actually had 28 embryos to begin with during that cycle. We are going to transfer 2 this time. I'm closing in on 35, don't have any LOs yet, and we are really hoping for better luck with this cycle.

@brownie: I would actually love to hear more about how to claim IVF/medical expenses on my taxes. This is definitely something DH and I need to do! I hoping I can get some of my house downpayment savings back ;)! Maybe I can get more info from you sometime.

Anyhow, I'm always happy to listen and give help where I can! This is a tough road to travel down on your own even with a supportive partner, family, and friends. It is difficult to understand it unless you've been through it.

We were starting our IVF cycle about this time last year. We had unexplained infertility, and completed 3 unsuccessful IUIs with femara and 1 with injectables. I had a healthy twin pregnancy from our first cycle with pretty low stimulation and a 5 day transfer of 2 blasts.

Advice?

As MGG said, the decision of how many embryos to transfer is a huge one, and it's also one your clinic will have a say in. Higher order multiples are a possibility that has to be considered, and our clinic was good about counseling us about the risks. We chose to transfer two and feel very lucky that we ended up with twins. I would ask about their freezing standards for any extra embryos. We assumed we'd have some backup embryos for an FET, but our clinic has an extremely high standard for what they will cryo. While we had good embryos, none of our 'extra' 4 met the bar, and could not be frozen. This definitely played a role in our decision to transfer a second. Also ask about the cryo and FET costs - ours would have been a few hundred dollars per quarter to keep frozen, and another few thousand for each FET, which is a pretty big investment, but some places it's included in the package.

I was most interested in getting as much logistical info as possible. They should be able to give you a sample/estimated calendar and detailed financial info. Ask about what they might see as potential roadblocks to your specific timeline (I had a cyst that delayed us a month) or what happens to your financial investment if they cycle is cancelled at any point.

Ask about your specific situation and how meds or protocols should be adjusted for your conditions. There are SO many options for meds - different combinations and different dosages.

My insurance/hmo had an online formulary that I could look up which meds could be covered. While they didn't cover any of the big guns, I could get the femara, syringes, antibiotics, pain meds, etc. covered for very little out of pocket. RE offices also have access to samples and coupons, so ask for them and milk them as much as possible.

@spaniellove: @Trailmix: I think there are a decent number of IVF/infertility grads around here, but for better or worse, many of us are on the flip side and are pregnant or parenting. I know how lonely it can feel. It took us almost 2 years before we were successful. Please feel free to message me, or start threads to catch our eye! I sincerely wish you both the best of luck!

@Trailmix: I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I wish you the best of luck with the IUI cycle! I share your frustration about the lack of support for infertility in general. I'm kind of depressed today because my experience is moving along painfully slow. Every time I go to the RE there are more tests to be done and yesterday they FINALLY prescribed Clomid for me, then called later to say it was a mistake and I need more testing still. I'm worried they are running up the bill too much and my insurance is going to stop paying for it! Ugh, but that's a long story and I'm trying to tell myself all the testing is necessary. Let me know if you want to talk, I am here going through the same thing and super frustrated..

@spaniellove: I wish I could help, but like I said to @trailmix above, I've been seeing an RE since July and still haven't started treatment! Best of luck to you!

@daniellemybelle: I definitely would like to see more conversation here about this. Not only am I embarking on this, but I've always known that if we're even successful our child will have special needs. Gosh I thought TTC would be the easy part!

Some financing ideas:
We used our FSA (flexible spending accounts) to pay for portions of our treatment.

What wasn't covered there, we were able to claim on taxes. It has to be over like 7.5% of your income for medical expenses. You can also claim a certain amount of hotel expenses (we spent 2 weeks in a hotel) and mileage. We have a number of doctors outside of our area so that helped. We were also able to do claim the embryo freezing.

You still have to have the money up front but we were able to pay most of it off pretty quickly with those 2.

@spaniellove: HB is definitely my favorite site now that I'm pregnant, but during my struggle with infertility, I spent much more time on weddingbee. There are a few threads dedicated solely to infertility and/or IVF and lots of consistent people on there. There is also a huge blog community out there. If you email me, I'll give you my blog link, but you can also go to Stirrup-Queens. She has a blogroll of hundreds of blogs related to all stages of infertility.

@Trailmix: I am totally threadjacking, but I just wanted to say that it made me sad to hear you say that. :(

I imagine infertility is so painful and personal, blogging about it might not be something any of you doing IVF would ever consider, but I know that I would appreciate more perspectives like yours on the blog. I also think it might bring more women struggling to conceive to the community through Google searches. Right now, the blog is really focused on pregnancy/babies, so I think that is why the boards are that way as well.

Best wishes to all of you. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

@spaniellove: Yes, the billed and the insurance covered the meds. But again we only did a little of it. My friend did it for most of her meds and got a letter from the insurance company about it. Worst case would be that you have to repay them (but it's a good loan).

Wow, I am so relieved someone responded!

@Trailmix: Like you said, there isn't much talk here about infertility/treatments and I wish there was more support for that.

@GreenThumb: I'm so sorry the first round didn't work out. How long did you wait before the FET? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works this time!

@brownie: When you say they billed your insurance, do you mean they found a way to bill so that your insurance would actually cover the meds? That would be so helpful.

@Mrs Green Grass: I think I might ask you to take a look at this clinic, if you don't mind!

I remember that when I first went to the RE, (and pretty much throughout the process) I was only concerned with the next step. Instead, I would ask about the entire process as well as cost up front.

I think the very most important thing is feeling comfortable at the office. I loved my entire RE office and although they were middle of the road price-wise and had slightly lower numbers, we stuck with them because it felt right.

SARC numbers can be deceiving because some doctors will cancel cycles that seem to have low odds or will refuse patients with higher risks. My office had great numbers a few years ago, then they dropped a bit. I never asked why, but I bet they do...either new techniques or new clients, etc.

Also, the really important part is the embryology team. Some offices have their own, some use an outside team. A huge part of the success of IVF is how successfully they grow the embryos, how well they do ICSI, etc. I'd ask how long they've been doing ICSI, how much experience they have.

One last note. I ended up with high order multiples after transferring 2 Day 5 blastocysts. Although my case was uncommon, I'm seeing more an more evidence that identical twinning is higher in IVF. This was never mentioned by my RE and we never considered that we could potentially end up with more than two embryos "taking." There are many reasons to transfer two (low egg quality, etc) but I highly suggest being conservative when it comes to transfers.

Please feel free to contact me at anytime.

We did IVF due to MFI. My husband has Cystic Fibrosis and no vas deferens. We knew that if we wanted kids we would have to go that route. We were successful with our first try and have a little boy. We are hoping to do a frozen transfer next summer for a second child.

It was a long and expensive process. We say our son is our 20000 dollar baby. But he is worth every single penny. We maxed out both credit cards to have him. We did find that there are a few pharmacies that would bill our insurance for medicines. We only used them a little so some of the medicines were covered.

We had to do IVF with ICSI and with them pulling the sperm from my husband. We also did a 5 day transfer instead of a 3 day transfer.

Things I would ask include how often and how they will contact you. We didn't have alot of contact at the beginning and I felt very confused. When we got into the cycle it wasn't so bad.

Ask if there is any sort of way to get a discount if you do the less medicated. We had the option to implant 1 egg but we did end up doing 2 because only 2 were ready and we didn't want to "waste" our money. I also wanted twins (we didn't get them).

It is a long process. It can seem very lonely. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

@Spaniellove I saw this post last night and meant to reply but totally forgot until now! I was actually going to suggest messaging @greenthumb because she was one of the only ones I could think of on HB who has done IVF...

For what it's worth, we're probably on the road to IVF as I was just diagnosed with Diminished Ovarian Reserve and it sounds like our chances of conceiving naturally are pretty slim. We're starting with and injectables+IUI cycle (300iu of Gonal F, to be specific) and then we'll go from there.

To be honest, there's not too many women struggling with infertility on these boards and the lack of support and understanding has been frustrating to me at times.

Good luck with everything!

@spaniellove: First of all, I'm really sorry that you have to go through this! I, too, was shocked to find out that my DH and I would need IVF/ICSI this past spring (we were given a 2% chance on our own and only a 6-8% chance with IUI). At this point I've been through 1 full IVF (BFN, unfortunately) and am going to have a frozen embryo transfer on Oct 4th.

I know the whole process can be overwhelming. Try to take everything one step at a time and ask your doc/nurses any questions you have (even ask more than once if needed). We also had to pay out of pocket. We used $$ that was being saved for a house downpayment for the first round, and honestly, borrowed $$ from my parents for this second round since we didn't want to wait to save more $$ ourselves. I joke that a grandchild is a better return on their investment than keeping the $$ in the bank ;).

For my first appt we went over the results from DH's SA and my HSG and decided pretty quickly that we needed to go the IVF/ICSI route. After that it was just scheduling!

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. I know it is nice to chat with someone outside the Doc's office sometimes! Wishing you the best of luck as you move forward!!!

We've recently learned that we have MFI so TTC the usual way isn't going to work for us. We're meeting with an RE soon to discuss IUI or ICSI, although with our numbers I think IUI is out and ICSI is the way to go.

Bees who've gone through IVF, do you have any advice about this process? Is there anything we should be asking when meeting with the clinic for the first time? I've seen their numbers on the SART site. Besides the cost I'm concerned about the fact that the meds are contraindicated with my health issues but I don't want to do minimal stimulation because it sounds like money down the drain.
