@LindsayinNY: Ugh, sorry to hear your friend is still in limbo. At least with 70, I imagine/hope the chance of tube rupture is very low! Maybe the 231 was a fluke or it's just a bit of residual tissue from an early blighted ovum? That's what they think mine is, and my HCG was 1661 today, which is my 7th blood draw in two weeks.

@DesertDreams88: Her blood work has continued to fluctuate... She's been back every other day since last week, if I'm recalling correctly? I know from Saturday to Monday, her HCG only dropped 2 points - it's been hovering in the 70s, I believe?

@78h2o: Not sure about progesterone? But, yes about the methotrexate making you have to wait after... That's a definitely down side.

My Hcg did something similar and they were very concerned about an ectopic. They told me though that they wouldn't be able to see if it was a uterine pregnancy until 1000 hCG. So I got bloodwork until it got that high and they did see a uterine pregnancy. I then measured behind until 7.5 weeks when I miscarried.

What was her progesterone like? Sometimes that can point one way or the other.

The sucky thing with methotrexate is I think you have to take 2-3 months off from trying afterwards...but I think they recommend that after an ectopic anyway. She might want to ride it out another 2-4 days though to see if her levels get high enough for them to see something.

ETA: just did a quick Google search and found this article about Hcg levels and what can be seen on ultrasound. Their is a graph that might be helpful. http://www.babymed.com/blogs/dramos/which-serum-hcg-level-should-you-see-pregnancy-ultrasound

I'm sorry it wasn't better news :( @swurlygurl had what sounds like a similar experience- her ectopic wasn't tubal so it didn't show on the us and she took the methotrexate successfully

@Shutterbug: ultrasound showed nothing this morning. RE was just as confused about things and had no explanation. She goes back tomorrow for full panel blood work and they mentioned prescribing methotrexate (?) if her blood work comes back okay.

@LindsayInNY: @brady80: oh yeah I totally forgot about the mex, also a good option when detected early. The downsides being that you have to be monitored closely to make sure it worked and can't TTC again for a few months (which is why I decided against it when offered)

It sounds like it could be ectopic. I had an ectopic (from IVF), which is rare but it happens. My hcg started out low, around 12 and slowly rose. I started having pain, which my doctor dismissed. They could see "something" on the u/s. After a night of pretty bad pain, I went in for a 3d u/s and they could tell right away. I ended up getting a methotrxate shot, which I think is a form of chemo. It basically dissolves the embryo. As far as I know, there is not any damage to my tube...when I had a c-section my doctor said my tube looked great! I hope they are able to figure out for your friend what is going on, but they should be able to see something on an u/s

@LindsayInNY: if the tube ruptures, they usually remove it. Which means it can't ever happen again (in that tube anyway) but it can take longer to get pregnant again- probably a moot point for someone who is pursuing IVF though. If the tube hasn't ruptured, it depends on the doctor, (and whether there are other factors like endo) but in many cases they will remove the sac and repair the tube, leaving it intact for future eggs to travel down.

@LindsayInNY: I really don't know, and I hope that's not the case for your friend, but in any case it's good she'll find out tomorrow. If it is an ectopic, it will likely be caught early before the tube ruptures since she doesn't have any pain. This is what happened to me and I was very fortunate. If it were me I'd tell my friend to bring her husband- I was by myself when I found out and I wish I hadn't been. And if everything is ok (FX it is!) it will be a joyous thing for them to experience together!

@Anya: That's what her and I have both read. But it seems odd that it spiked as much as it did in one week? She's not in pain which seems to be the promising thing. I just wish I could give her some other hope of what it could be...

I wasn't sure what board to post this to... It's for a friend, NOT me.

After her 6th IUI (required by insurance before moving to IVF), she finally got her BFP! She sent me the picture thinking she was out but my eyes have been trained to spot lines ;) This was on Tuesday the 7th. She had betas on Wednesday the 8th (hcg = 18), Friday the 10th (38), Sunday the 12th (74) and Tuesday the 14th (71). She was put on progesterone somewhere along the line during all that. After Tuesday the 14th, she was basically told to prepare for it to continue to go down. In the meantime, they've been having her come back weekly to check to see if/when her levels zero out so she can move forward with IVF. So she went in last Tuesday the 21st, betas were 50 or 51, I think? And then again today, when betas came back at 231. She's going in tomorrow for an ultrasound to see what's up because I guess they're concerned it's ectopic. But she's not experiencing pain. She's had some off and on spotting (despite stopping progesterone, no AF), sensitive smell and boobs over the last two weeks... I sent her an invite to HB and I know she browses on occasion but isn't active.

Can anyone provide any other insight as to what could be happening? I tried googling but didn't come up with a ton and if anyone has experienced anything, someone on HB is bound to have!!
