UPDATE: the mastitis is gone, and my breast soreness is mostly gone, but I am producing almost NOTHING! I can't pump enough to keep up with baby's needs. Left boob is outputting 2-4 oz and right is just over 1! I will try the lecithin, massage and exfoliating...

I had one side that was prone to clogged ducts and I used to massage it in the shower while trying to hit it with hot water. Sometimes it would take awhile (and be painful while doing it) but it always used to work to get the painful lumps out and I never developed mastitis. I also needed to open up milk blisters a couple times on that side as well, and I think that helped too. (I didn't try lecithin because I was avoiding it for my elimination diet so no advice there).

Exfoliate the nipple in the shower because pumping without the friction and saliva from baby's mouth causes dried milk fat to build up in the nipple. Take lecithin religiously. See if you have a milk blister or bleb on the nipple. If so, you can try to open it up with a clean needle and pump. And if you can, ask your husband to suck out the clog. It's a bit faster than having the baby do it.

I've had a clogged duct recently. I kneaded it with my Knuckle constantly while baby was nursing and it went away after two days.

@pachamama: very sore with one big lump. It's always on the top inner part of my right breast and extends down to the nipple. I've never had one last more than a day because I freak out a little and constantly pump and nurse until it's gone. I had mastatis once and that is something i never want to repeat that experience. I also use a heating pad before and during pumping/nursing and massage the breast while nursing and pumping. I just bought lecithin!

Another vote for lots of lecithin and dangle nursing and heat. I always had one side produce more than the other.

I get a clogged duct at least 1-2x/month. The thing that works the best for me is dangle nursing. So instead of cradling DS in my arms and bringing him to the breast, i either kneel over him with his chin pointing towards to clog or I lay him in my lap and bend forward. Works every time. I am going to start the lecithin soon because I'm hoping to pump wean in nov when DS turns 1.

In addition to the lecithin you could try a warm compress while you pump and massaging to get more milk out.

Another vote for lecithin here! I had recurring clogged ducts, and I followed the advice of my amazing LC who recommended following the advice of KellyMom (http://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/lecithin/). NO MORE clogged ducts! They sell it at CVS!

ETA My right boob also slacked. But I think that was the case from the beginning. ? Good luck! Let us know if you find something that works for you! Clogs suck!!

My lactation consultant swears by lecithin. I second that! I'm not sure of the dosage but I'd think it's pretty easy to find.

Maybe taking lecithin? I read about it as a preventative for clogs and used it for a couple weeks when weaning with my first LO after I got mastitis at 12 months in. I'm really prone to clogs and I think it helped.

I have been EBF my son successfully for almost 9 months but lately since back at work and pumping, my right boob is such a slacker! It only outputs half the milk the other does. Which leads to clogged ducts and a wicked case of matitis (8.5 months in WTF)
Any advice on how to get the milk flowing and reduce clogs/mastitis? I can tell LO gets frustrated with it which leads to a vicious cycle. I can only pump 1-2 times during my 8 hour teaching day... I eat oats, exercise and pound water.
