@misolee: correct. This is becoming very common. Both of our employers have this rule in place which is why DH and I have seperate insurance.

Also, just a heads up but employers are not required to cover your spouse if they have a plan through their own insurance so you can't just all go into one family plan.

I have one, husband has one, and my LO is under my husbands. It stinks bc I'm the only one with a diff insurance

@MamaG: is right. Give me a second to find an old post I wrote on this when I was fresh out of the convo with insurance.

ETA. ok here was my response to someone with a $700/$1,400 individual/family deductible and a $4,700 out of pocket max. Hope this helps.

According to my insurance company when I called. Each person on your policy uses the individual deductible, so for you, and you only, you will have to accumulate $700 in expenses (not $1,400) before you meet the deductible. So after you pay $700 your 80%/20% will kick in and you will pay 20% of costs up to your individual out of pocket max of $4,700.
If you husband has any major medical issues in the mean time, he would also have a $700 deductible and $4,700 OOP max.
It's my understanding that where the "Family" deductibles/OOP max come into play is when you have more than two people. Each person will have their own $700 deductible they will be counting towards, but the max family deductible is $1,400.

Similar situation and we are adding the baby + me to my husband's plan after birth.

I asked HR during benefit signup and they told me I would hit my ($2,000) OOP max with childbirth and any baby expenses would be billed to my husband's plan (and increasing the OOP max from $2,000 to $4,000) but I'm going to switch to my husband's plan at this time to have medical coverage during my unpaid leave.

@DesertDreams88: When your baby is automatically covered by your plan for the first 30 days, it's still your individual plan. It's not until after the 30 days that you would add him to someone's policy as a separate entity/dependent (with raised deductible).

@DesertDreams88: clarify how the family deductible works. Ours is still per person so on DH an it's 1,000 per person up to 3,000. Each of the three have 1,000 to meet. Our DD2 hit hers last year but the other didn't. I think this is how it typically works and most people don't understand that.

@mrsbells & @mamag: I guess my point is, I'm very much leaning towards NOT wanting them covered automatically for 30 days on my plan, because it will jack up my deductible & OOP max, right when I'll be getting a couple of BIG claims (doctor & hospital). My husband hopefully won't be incurring any big charges for anything in the next couple of months (knock on wood).

@alphagam84: actually my plan does cover baby for 30 days. My kids both go on DH plan and get double coverage for those 30days. I'm not saying all plans work that way but some do.

@DesertDreams88: at the time LO was born we also had separate insurance. By law you dont have to add the baby to your plan for the first 30 days after birth they are automatically covered by your plan.

@MommySLP: I think that's only if your child is covered on both plans. So in your senario your husbands would be primary and yours secondary. But depending on circumstances you'd only need them covered by one parent.

Not sure if it's different based on states, but for our insurance the baby had to go on whichevers parents birthday fell first in the calendar year. (My kids have DH as their primary insurance since his birthday is Jan & mine is sept)

Is your deductible the same for each member? For example, on our HDP we have employee plus family. Our OOP max went up marginally. We have a 4000 deductible per person OR a 6000 deductible family whichever occurs first.

Eta I just reread your statement. So ignore the above. But read below it still applies

maybe it would make the most sense to add her to yours because both you and her will likely have the greatest medical expenses until the end of the year.
And then you will probably need to reevaluate at open enrollment next year to see who will have more medical expenses (if you can predict that) and put her on that one. I think you want the two highest medical users on the same plan. You have a better chance of hitting the deductible and insurance covering more.
Does that make sense?

@Ms.Badger: Baby is not automatically covered under the mother's plan at birth. You have 30 days from birth to add the baby to the mom's or dad's insurance.

@Ms. Badger: & @MrsJYW: Canceling my husband's plan and putting is all together on one plan does not SEEM like the best option, though I realize it works out better for some people that way. If we did that route, we'd lose my husband's employer's HSA contribution of $1000; AND our premiums would be very expensive. We just have to chance it with the two deductibles/OOP maxes.

Specific numbers: Currently my husband and I pay $0 in premiums, and to add a child to our plan would make it $110-$140 premium monthly. Going to a family plan would be $500 premium monthly.

@Ms. Badger: The newborn is automatically covered for 31 days retroactively under whichever plan we put him on, from what I understand. We have the same healthcare provider. I know it won't be difficult to get him covered, just trying to figure out the better financial option.

@Regberadaisy: I don't understand your first question, sorry :-/ As for your second question, our employers offer employee only, employee + spouse, employee + child, and employee + family. However, this only affects the premium price. Anything outside of a individual plan, is automatically $4000 dudctible/$9000 OOP max.

Ugh, I made the same miscalculation with not realizing deductible and oop max doubled once I added DD and it burned me. I think it does make sense to add you LO to your DHs plan to keep your personal maxes low. LOs costs the first year should be mostly preventative hopefully and I'm guessing covered 100% under your DHs plan.

I would cancel Your husbands plan and put all of you on one family plan through your employer. Since it's a qualifying life event you should be able to cancel his and change yours, as long as file within 30 days of birth.

baby is automatically on your insurance for first 2 weeks maybe, including all birth hospital charges. Then you need to add baby to one of your 2 plans. We added J to DH's plan, no problems. If you automatically get bumped up to family, but sure it's not cheaper for all three of you to be on same insurance (it isn't for us, slightly cheaper for me to have my own.)

Why can't the baby go on yours or DH plan then the other follow? Since its jumping to a family plan anyway?

Are you sure neither of your plans have a plus child plan? I'm on a HD as well and we half self, self + spouse, self + child, and family.

I will try to make this as detailed but as succinct and clear as possible. Healthcare is so confusing by nature, though! Baby was due yesterday and is still chillaxing inside. So I need to figure this out ASAP.

My husband and I are on separate, but VERY similar employer-provided, individual, high-deductible HSA plans. Our premiums are basically the same, our deductibles each are $2600, and everything after the deductible is covered 80/20 coinsurance. Both of our network OOP maxes is $4500. I was totally fine with those numbers, and saved for the birth based on them. However, just last week I finally realized that once the baby is born, we have to add him to one of our plans, which immediately converts the individual plan to a family plan. Than means that the deductible (whether it's my husband's plan or my plan), jumps to $4000 and OOP max jumps to $9000. Yikes!

So, given those numbers, doesn't it probably make the most sense to put the baby on my husband's plan, in order to keep my deductible & OOP max low for my hospital stay / delivery charges??

What am I missing here, if anything?

***Also, I know the baby will be getting their own claims / bills for their hospital stay.
