For me, I learned if I connected with other moms after just a few meet ups. I think it it's been a while you should move on as well, unless that's the only option you can think of for socialization right now.

I would just connect with the mum you click with and try see her outside of the group. I wouldn't go to a group if I wasn't feeling it.

If you're not feeling a good connection with the group then I doubt it will improve much. Maybe you could ask the one mom you like to meet up away from the group? As the weather gets better, ask her to meet you to do more outside stuff?

Another option would be to start a new group!

I'd definitely find a new playgroup. We were very fortunate that we found a playgroup that both LO and I loved. A few of us moms met at Gymboree Play & Music classes, and we formed our own playgroup when our LO's were just a few months old. Our kids are 2.5 years old now, and we are still very good friends. I wouldn't waste your time or energy on a group of ladies that you don't feel comfortable around and don't click with. The right group is out there for you, trust me!

I joined a local mom's group when LO was born. I really liked those moms. We moved when LO was 8 months and I joined the local mom's group. I haven't connected with any of them but get together on the rare occasion that our schedules line up. I still drive the 40 minutes to our old town to visit the first group once a month. I'd keep looking for a group that is a better fit for you.

@Freckles: My LO does like the playtime, which is why I've been sticking with the group. I keep telling myself it's not so much for me, but for him.

But@lamariniere: had a good point about another group. I know another meets at a local church and might start branching out to see if I "click" better someplace else. Thanks everyone!

I would probably stick with it a little while longer as there's at least one person you like talking to :) I've been in that situation before, where out of around 10 Mums there was only a couple that I stayed in contact with after I stopped wanting to hang out with the group regularly. Maybe after a while you can arrange to meet up with that one Mum and do something else.

I'm kind of in that situation at the moment where I just moved to a new area and wanted to meet people. But I decided to do more playgroup/classes so there wasn't so much pressure to chat if I didn't want to.

If you don't click, I think it's time to move on. I'm in 2 playgroups, one for each of my children. I click much more with the women in LO2's group than the women in LO1's group.

I am in a similar situation. I joined a mom group this fall and a couple of the moms are nice, but tge rest are very materialistic and status obsessed. I don't have much in common with them for the most part. BUT, our kids are all the same age and zoned for the same schools. And since I am new here, I may need reference letters if I want to join a local private club (the nicest swimming pools all have waiting lists and require 4 member reference letters). So I kind of see the situation as bigger than me, that my family would benefit from my continued connection. So for now I still attend the meet-ups, which are only once a month.

Unless you have better plans, I would personally stick with the group meetings until your LO starts play school. Does your LO like the gatherings? You can always gradually stop hanging out with them.

I don't have time in my life for people I don't like. I would rather focus on real friends! Maybe invite the one lady you like for coffee and see if one on one you click and pursue that friendship, and ditch the rest! Your LO will make plenty of friends at baby playschool in the fall!

I joined a local mom's group last Fall and there are about 10 of us mom's from the community. We meet once a week in each other's homes to have coffee and let the babies hang out. I really don't like the group that much. They all live in the same community and already know each other, and there's maybe one person I connect with in the group.

For those of you that had babies in play groups, does it get better as they get older and I just need to hang in there? I feel awkward at the home meetings but I'm wondering that as our LO's get older and we do field trips if things will improve. I'm reluctant to give it up since it is socialization for LO, but he's starting a baby playskool in the Fall, so I am thinking about being a mom's group drop out then. Anyone have/had a similar experience?
