@Mrs. Champagne: sumer08: that is so encouraging to hear you have completed the program! Good for you! Did it take about 9 weeks or did it take longer than that for you?

Anyone want to share their running playlist? Maybe I'll start another thread for that.

Thanks for all the advice ladies! I'm going to go to a running shoe store (south sound running) to get fitted for the right type of shoes - they think youth shoes will be fine. I really hope I complete this!

I'm doing the Couch to 5k program right now...1 more week left! It has really been awesome...I've lost 10lbs so far, and I have 5 more lbs to go before I reach my pre-baby weight.

As far as shoes, you don't need fancy running shoes to get started. I bought a pair of reasonably priced Nikes at Kohls for like $40 a few summers ago and they still are great for me!

I highly recommend the program!! Best of luck! :)

Like @redsmarties, I was doing the couch to 5K before I got pregnant and had to give it a rest. I found buying a really cute running outfit helped to motivate me :)

My DH also bought me an awesome Garmin watch with GPS that tracked my speed and routes and made running really fun. He got it at Costco. You could map routes and try to beat your time, or you can put in your running plan so it beeps every 2 minutes so you can walk 2 mins/ run 2 mins etc. it was super motivating.

That being said I also heard of an iPhone app called "Zombies, Run!" that is supposed to help you prepare for a 5k run, it might be fun to check out!

Um so basically spend a lot of money on clothes, watches and apps!

Seriously if you follow the plan for couch to 5k and take your time building up to it, it won't seem like "work". I was not a runner at all and found it very enjoyable! Good luck!

I did couch to 5 k (but had to stop when morning sickness sidelined me).
Honestly, I didn't buy a book or anything - I just downloaded MapMyRun, and used a playlist of songs to clue me in to when to walk/run.
For me, because I was NOT athletic when I started, I had to try so hard not to get discouraged when I couldn't even do phase 1 on the first run. So instead, I modified it a bit (and did a phase zero) until I built up a bit of endurance.

Like PPs have said; tons of water, and please get good shoes - shin splints are brutal, and my sucky shoes made running excruciating.

also re: shoes, if you have a running store near you, go there! they can do a gait analysis to tell you what kind of shoes would be best and probably special order a pair in your size.

C25K is awesome. Definitely get a good app that lets you play your own music and tells you when to walk/run. And I can't emphasize these last two enough: Start drinking a lot of water, and invest in good running shoes.

I did c25k last year before I got pregnant and I really liked it. I am NOT a runner, and have always loathed running, but I always felt like it was the best over-all workout for my body. I had the app on my phone (it's available for Android, too) and that was great because I didn't have to keep checking a watch or stopclock or anything. It just dings a bell when it's time to switch pace. I found the program to be challenging but not so challenging that I felt like I couldn't handle it. It pushed me just enough to keep me going! Good luck!

@sandy: I run regularly now (and have been for 6-7 years). I never ran in college or high school but started with a 5K around age 24. When I started I listened to music and would run for 1 song and walk for one song and once that got easy I started doing minutes: run 5 min, walk 2 min. And decreased the walking portion until I could run 20 min straight. It progressed to the point where I have run a couple marathons. I used Hal Higdon to train for my first half marathon about 6 months after that first 5K. Point is: start small and stick with it!

As far as shoes, I go to running stores, but have no idea about the small sizes. Like @78h2o: I'm a big foot! I just wear Men's running shoes to get around it.

I was going to start a C25k program with a moms group last week, but I had such a bad cold I was unable to start! I'm going to download that app and try to start this weekend, even though I'm still a little sick! I really need a jogging stroller though... I might try to make due with my B-agile until I get one.

I have the opposite problem with shoes... my usual size is 10.5-11, so in running shoes I often need an 11-11.5!!! I ordered new shoes last week via Amazon, as they have free returns on many of their shoes and they have a lot of sizes available. Luckily they fit great and seem comfortable.

If you don't know what kind of shoe you need, in terms of stability, arch support, etc., it's good to go to a local running store and have them fit you after watching you run on a treadmill. Maybe they could special order you shoes in a smaller size?

Good luck!

I would start easier, especially if you're used to the eliptical. Most of my work to become a runner has been in training my joints to take the stress. I personally started with jogging a block, walking a block. And really, really slow jogging. And I worked up from there.

Yes Couch to 5k is awesome! Do you have an iPhone? There's an app that makes it really easy - it tells you when to run and when to walk, and you can listen to music at the same time.

I've never been a runner...I have always opted for the elliptical. A new mom friend wants me to do a 5k with her and I feel like this might be the motivation I need to try out running...and get back in shape (I lost all the baby weight 3 months pp...kept it off until the holidays hit...and now LO is 17 months and I would love to lose 5 lbs for summer).

I have no idea where to start. I don't have good running shoes (I have size 4.5 feet and kids shoes aren't as sturdy as adult shoes). Should I do Couch to 5k? I saw a thread where someone mentioned Hal Higdon. I need advice bc I don't want to fail at this. Thanks!
