I would leave. I switched providers after I had a miscarriage and a stillbirth- my midwife said I would be fine to get pregnant again and I thought that was very irresponsible of her. I called high risk docs and asked for a blood test (I paid for it myself). I'm glad I did, as I have a blood clotting disorder and needed blood thinner shots and baby aspirin this last pregnancy. If I hadn't done that, I'm certain I would have had another loss.

Good luck to you, I hope you get some answers and a sticky baby. :goodluck:

I agree with @oskarsmommy about "driving the bus." If I were you, I would be pushy as this is your family and your health. After 5 months of not getting pregnant and before either of my miscarriages, I just had a feeling that something was "off." I made an appointment with my OB and basically demanded the cycle day 3 testing with the argument that I was happy to pay for it and I just needed her to order it and she agreed. After my second miscarriage, I went in with the same argument (if it was on my dime, then why did they care?) and she agreed that I could do the testing (which I didn't end up doing based on the results from the D&C fetal tissue testing results) but the choice was up to me and I essentially wasn't going to take no for an answer. After some health related issues with my LO and his old peds office, I learned that you really do need to be your own advocate. They may think that testing is a waste of time and money but at the end of the day, it is your time and your money and you get to choose how to spend it. Just my unsolicited two cents! :silly:

@Shantuck: I have not had any testing done at this point. They say since I had a very easy healthy first pregnancy they aren't worried u til after 3 losses, which seems to be the norm. I was resigned to having to wait until after a 3rd loss, but the opportunity to rule out anything much sooner would be so nice. It may just be, as my doctor put it, "a streak of bad luck," But I feel like something more is going on.

@oskarsmommy: that is a good idea too! I did confirm that they will send me to a local lab for blood work.

I'm still having weekly blood draws until my hcg is back at zero and they won't order the tests until I'm at that point. But yeah, I think I'll ask them to write out the script and then start the hunt for a new doctor. Thank you everyone for the advice.

Get the bloodwork done before the contract is up. You have a right to have a copy, so make sure to get it ASAP. Some labs automatically send results to you via healthvault.

I'm not sure where you are located but where I'm at, my doc didn't require 3 losses before allowing me to do testing. After my second loss I asked about it and the doctor said she didn't recommend it for me based on the results of the tests of the tissue from my D&C (basically a fluke loss) but left the choice entirely up to me. I guess I'm trying to say that I wouldn't assume that a new practice wouldn't just allow you to go in and do testing. However, if your insurance will cover the testing (i.e., it's being charged through the lab rather than the OB's office), it might just be worthwhile to get the testing done and then bring a copy of the results to the new doc to come up with a plan of attack.

ETA: Have you done any cycle day 3 testing to see if anything showed up as unusual? The reason I ask is because there are a few of us on these boards who have had low amh/high fsh, which can be a sign that egg quality isn't the greatest. I was told that I basically needed to keep at it to catch a good egg. While I wasn't comforting to know that I had a much higher risk of loss, it was at least comforting to have some sort of explanation as to why it kept happening to me.

I would leave. I had a whole bunch of blood work done after my first loss, and I did it all myself. I had to go to a couple different dr's (endo, hematologist) and then my ob complied with the rest - what ever I asked she agreed to. My insurance thus far has covered all of it. I think you can sort of drive the bus yourself and get the tests you need on your own.

I'd just switch immediately. I would have zero faith that your current office would do things correctly and/or in the same way that a new office would, that they would send over any records in a timely fashion, etc. You might end up having to just redo the testing anyways.

I think it's important to have a doctors office that you like and trust -- I would talk to any new one immediately about their policy on blood work after miscarriages. I don't think it's uncommon to wait for bloodwork until 3 losses, but it sounds like you would feel more comfortable hearing that from a different/better practice. Or, if you really want to push for testing sooner, then be upfront about that with any new doc.

@MaryM: That is truly horrible about the hospital. My DH would have also made some very angry phone calls. I agree, it seems like it shouldn't be that hard for these places to get their crap together on an online system.

@Tanjowen: you might wait on records.

My practice charges for a person to get copies of files. But if a doctor requests them they don't.

You could also just push a new doctor for testing if you don't want to deal with them. I was only offered one of two panels because the doctor said insurance doesn't usually cover the second after only two losses. I asked for it anyway, willing to risk paying out of pocket.

It was covered.

But it took two months for the doctor to call with the results so I'm never seeing her again.

Yeah. I would see if they can order the bloodwork at a freestanding lab and leave.

That's an awful experience. I kept getting mail from the hospital even after I delivered our daughter stillborn celebrating her "upcoming" birth.

Someone got a very angry phone call from DH...

I hate when people can't update files correctly. When they're digital, how can it be so hard?

@brownie: And this is why I asked, because I never would have thought of this. Thank you so much. I'm supposed to call next week to schedule the blood work, so I'll be sure to do that and ask for a copy of my records too

Have them update your paperwork, get the script for the blood work. Then move and have them transfer all of your information over. Then the other place just takes over. Cite the insurance as why you are moving.

I have been faithful to the same office that delivered my LO, which is a practice attached to our local hospital with several doctors. The doctors are wonderful, but the staff is terrible - they fail to update charts, fail to schedule appointments appropriately and payments/insurance are usually a mess.

I had my 2nd miscarriage recently. The first was last December at 9 weeks, and this last one at 7 weeks. The office policy is to not do blood work testing until after 3 losses. However, this last miscarriage was such a shit show with the office that they have offered to do the blood work after only 2 losses. **I added to the bottom of the post a brief overview about my experience if you care to read about it**

I really want to leave the office. To further complicate matters, my insurance company and these providers are not renewing their contract, so after this month, I would have to pay out of pocket for any services.

To get to the point, would you pay out of pocket to have the bloodwork done with this practice since they are offering it and then leave, or chance switching to a new practice that might not do the bloodwork till after another loss? I'm torn because I want to rule out any underlying cause before having to go through another loss.

** The staff somehow failed to put in my file that I was having a miscarriage after 2 visits with ultrasounds and bloodwork, and on my 3rd visit to have a follow up ultrasound to see if the baby had developed any further, they had me as a first prenatal visit - I got the whole baby packet, notice that I was having a baby sent to my insurance company, and an attempt to have the nurse walk me through my delivery options on the day I learned I was not having a baby. I lost my cool and there was a lot of tears, and the doctor came running to apologize and sorted it out. Apparently they had ZERO information in my file that I was having a miscarriage. And I've had to call my insurance company and ask them to quit sending me information on pregnancy and my health benefits. If I wasn't so tired about it all I would laugh. Or cry.
