@jh524 nothing much really. Just kept her playing or we layed in bed reading (which is often a failure cause shell get fussy) or ill walk around the house with her, look out the window etc. Just anything other than laying her down to sleep u til we hit the 2 hr mark.

@SCG00387, @MRSMATE, @MRS. BEE, @RUBYCALI, @SAMMYFAB, @NOVBABY1112, @ADIRA, @JOJOGIRL, @MRSJYW

Thank you so much for all your advice.
I just wanted to give everyone an update since this post -
Since this post, I tried nap/bedtime training for another 2 days and decided to scrap nap training until we had her bedtime training better established.
Taking everyone's advice, i've extended baby girl's wake time to 2 hours and it has been the best thing i couldve done for her. she now falls asleep for her naps without any fuss or fight and is in a better mood throughout the day.
her first nap of the day in the morning lasts about 2 hrs while the rest of her naps (3 more) lasts <45 minutes.
Her bedtime routine is still in place but she now goes to bed about an hr earlier and has reduced her crying from 30 mins to 20 (the past few days) to 10 minutes today.

We are finally seeing some progress and am so happy!
Thank you again everyone!

Agree with PPs, we were on a 2 hour wake time and we always had to push bedtime back if his last nap ran over (even now at 11 months!)

Agree about the last nap! We don't let LO nap longer than 2 hrs as a general rule, and per my Isis sleep consult, always wake her 2-2.5 hrs before bedtime. Sometimes we cut a little closer to that (last night she napped 5:45pm-6:15pm when I woke her up, and went to bed at 8pm). If her sleep pressure isn't high enough, she'll cry in bed instead of falling asleep.

@yourekindapretty: I don't know that you need to keep her awake for a certain period of time, but definitely limit the length of her naps, especially the last one. I don't let Xander sleep longer than 2 hours during the day, and his last nap, regardless of when he went down, I'll wake him up at 6:00/6:30 in order to do bedtime routine and put him back to bed by 7:30. So his day might look like this:

5:30 a.m. - wake to eat, back to bed
7:30 - wake, play
9:00 - nap
10:30 - wake, eat, play
12:30 - nap
2:00 - wake, eat, play
4:00 - nap
5:00 - wake, eat, play
7:00 - bedtime!

Though sometimes at daycare he won't take his last nap, so his day will look more like this:

5:30 a.m. - wake to eat, back to bed
7:00 - up for daycare
9:00 - eat
9:30 - nap
11:00 - wake, play
12:00 - eat
2:00 - nap
3:00 - wake, eat, play
5:30 - nap at home
6:30 - woken by mom to eat, bedtime routine
7:30 - bedtime!

i agree with others that he may need a longer awake time in between naps and before bed- at least 2 hours before bed so he is tired enough to fall asleep. although TBH, sleep training does not work perfectly for every baby nor is it the right thing for every baby. the crying should definately have diminshed by now from what i have read/researched. trust your gut- only you can decide if you think it is working or if you should try a different approach, but def try the longer awake times and see if that helps at all.

Every baby is so different but what worked best for my son starting at 4 months was to use 2 hour wake times before naps. I stopped watching his sleepy cues and focused more on the clock. Prior to 4 months I would watch him like a hawk and put him down as soon as he yawned 3 times. He would then fall asleep really easily but wake up 35-40 minutes later really upset. We got into an undertired-overtired loop where he wasn't sleep enough to take a good nap which would then make him overtired because he didn't sleep long enough.

Stretching his awake time to 2 hours between wake up, naps and bedtime really helped us get into a good groove. On top of that, I learned that my son needed a bit more time before his first nap to make him extra tired because he tended to get really good consolidated sleep at night.

Ah! ok - i will try to cut down in her naps tomorrow and see how that works out. Do i just keep her up for at least 1.5 hrs if she starts showing signs of sleepiness (during the day) after 1 hr?

ps. THANK YOU FOR THE RESPONSES LADIES!!

I think she's probably not tired! That's a lot of nap time during the day, on top of sleeping through the night. Around that time we were doing 3 naps a day (morning, afternoon, and cat nap) and had longer awake times (about 2 hours or a little longer).

I know with my DD she was not ready for any kind of sleep training at that age. We first tried around 6mo, didn't work, so we waited until more like 8mo and it was a lot better. I think it had to do with her grasping object permanence.

@yourekindapretty: then 1 1/2 hour awake time before first nap isn't unreasonable. but i would limit the last nap to an hour, hour and a half maybe so she wakes up at 5:30, and goes to bed by 7:00-7:30.

i don't think she is tired enough at bedtime because she is taking such a long third nap.

it depends how old your lo is, but just looking at the schedule it looks like there isn't enough wake time before the first nap and before bedtime, and daytime naps are too long. the last nap of the day should be the shortest so it doesn't affect bedtime and not the longest.

@yourekindapretty: how old is your LO? We didn't do CIO so I can't comment or give advice on that, but there is no WAY my LO would ever go down for bed without a fight if he'd just woken up from a nap an hour and a half previously (least of all a 3 hour nap, although he's never taken one that long anyways!)

Hello ladies,
I need some advice and tips on sleep training (both bedtime and naps).

About a month ago I started sleep training my lo (19 weeks old) via CIO for bedtime. We established the following routine at bedtime (any time between 8 - 9 depending on her last nap):
Bath, feed, read, feed a little more, sing, put in crib.
We often extend the feeding or singing portion depending on the lo. we wait for her sleep cues before saying good night and putting her down in her crib.

The first night she cried 45 minutes, 33 minutes on night two, 33 minutes night three, 5 minutes night 4, then 30 minutes (give or take) since night 5 for the past three weeks.

Sometimes the crying is more like loud whining, sometimes its legit crying. Once she's asleep, she can stay asleep until 7am, some days she'll wake up around 4am for a feed (at which point i bring her into my bed to nurse/co-sleep until the morning).

I spoke to our pediatrician about her 30 minutes of crying and he asked:
1) is she happy to see you when you get her in the morning? Yes.
2) does she sleep through the night? Yes.
He believes, given our answers, that 30 minutes of her crying might be worth it since she sleeps through the night once she's done. He also suggested that i stop bringing her into bed with me when she wakes for her night feed. (instead i should feed her and put her back into her crib and let her cio).

I read Mrs. Bee's sleep training Charlie post and decided to nap train my lo. Maybe she's getting confused that she's allowed to nurse to sleep for her naps but not for bed.

Here's what our nap training looked like today, her first day:
7am Feed/Play
8:30am Nap - 10 mins crying
11am Wake, Feed, Play
12:26pm Nap - 13 mins crying
1:10pm Wake (i let her cry until 1:20 hoping she'd put herself back to sleep)
1:20pm Wake, feed, cuddle
2:33pm Nap - 27 mins crying
3:30pm wake (extremely upset)
4:00pm Nap - let her nurse to sleep in my bed.
7pm - Wake (finally in a good mood from the 3 hour nap)
8:30pm - put in crib after bedtime routine. it's been 30 mins and she's still crying.

Does anyone have any suggestions, tips, advice or comments?? i'm at my wits end because none of my books or research online really addresses this kind of situation where the baby's CIO doesn't get progressively better. Should I continue CIO at all? Should i try nap training again tomorrow??
