Can you leave town earlier? Have your husband drive you guys (for 3 hours) to the airport where you can take the direct flight, Then he can leave town? I'd stay until he returns home so he can drive that 3 hours again to come to the airport to pick you guys up.

Afterall you are the one who will travel for the first time alone with a 3-month old.... and who told him to leave you alone for a few months! Someone needs to pay for the consequences ;)

I'd do the direct flight just because you'll be alone. It's a real pain in the ass to go through security and carry bags and everything with a newborn. My daughter was 6 weeks the first time I flew with her, but my husband was able to come, so it wasn't too bad. The next flight I took with her she was a few months older and it was by myself and it was hard to maneuver through everything one handed.

But yes, flying with a small baby is SO much easier than a toddler. I just nursed her every time she got whiny when she was tiny. Now that she's older, asking her to sit still for a few hours is a nightmare. My advice for flying with a small baby is don't stress- the airplane is usually louder than your LO will be, and all that white noise will probably but him/her to sleep. Oh, and give yourself plenty of time to get settled in since everything magically takes twice as long once you add a baby to the mix. :)

i voted based on how i'd decide today. i would never want to drive 3 hours just to get a direct flight. but i don't have little ones so.... not much help here. i can say for sure though, jet blue is so much better than united and delta! so that in itself may be worth it.

I'd do the longer drive with the direct flight. Try to time it so your LO sleeps for the drive.

I would do a direct flight. You could hopefully time it so the baby naps in the car, and you'll be carrying a lot of crap so that would get annoying while changing planes.

I love JetBlue so I would drive to the airport and take the direct flight. At 3 months the likelyhood is that your baby will either sleep or cry the whole way. Just plan on at least 4 hours for the drive just in case. On the way home, I would get a hotel for that last night and sleep then go home the next morning. Leave a pack and play in the car for the hotel.

I'd do the longer drive with a direct flight. I flew with DS when he was 5 weeks. We drove 3+ hours to meet my family then flew to FL from NY with a layover. I had some help, and DH was with me, but I think I could have managed it myself.

DS usually sleeps in the car, so the drive wasn't bad at all. And I didn't think flying with DS was that bad at all. He did great, and it was a great trip.

I'd rather drive the shorter amount of time. At 3 months Murphy will say that the kiddo will need a bottle about an hour out (2 hours into your drive) and scream bloody murder and you'll have to stop, feed, etc. So your 3 hour drive easily will be 4 hours. Then you still need to be at the airport at least an hour ahead of the flight (maybe more depending on how good you're doing shlepping the stuff). So now you're at 5+ hours even before getting on the plane! And you haven't gotten through security, parked the car, checked in...and of course you're heading into another feeding time.

At least if you're only 1/2 hour away from the airport you can get there, check in, get through security and get settled BEFORE the LO even would probably need another bottle. Sounds SO much better.

I'd rather do the shorter drive and change planes. I say this because my son would be fine going somewhere but after being off his schedule and routine, he'd literally scream for hours in his carseat on the trip home (the closest family is 4 hour drive away) and just want to be held. I'd rather be able to get him home after the flights and onto his routine as fast as possible and not have to deal with a 3 hour drive after the flights listening to my son scream.

@Mrs. Bee: That's what I'm thinking.

Plus, if I'm exhausted when my flight back lands I could always get a hotel. It would just seem so silly to stay in a hotel when I'm only 3 hours away from home!

@pelikila: Direct flight is about 6 hours from take off to landing, with changing planes it's about 9 hours from taking off in my origin to landing in my final destination (which includes a 2 hours layover).

I agree with Mrs. Bee. I would say the drive because if you can time it somehow and allow LO to nap, it'll be a smooth drive. I can't imagine carrying luggage and baby and navigating the airports. Plus if there's a delay with the 2nd plane, oh boy!

@sorrycharlie: I always had REALLY bad ears, too. But I had tubes put in last spring and every flight I've had since has been easy peasy! Huge difference from nearly crying in agony, but I wonder if the baby will inherit my eardrums? Does it even work like that, lol?

I would probably drive because your lo will prolly sleep most of the way. Switching planes while you're carrying all the stuff you have to carry when traveling with a baby wouldn't be much fun!

Hmmmm. I kinda vote for the layover and shorter drive. 3 hours in a car is hard by yourself because you can't hand the baby a toy, feed them, etc. At least on a plane and on the layover you could hold them, change them, etc.

Looks like hubs will be gone for a few months next summer (which sucks 8-( ) so now I'm researching flights home while he's gone.

The idea of flying with a 3 month old kinda makes me wanna vomit. Then again, I imagine flying with a 3 month old would probably be easier than flying with a toddler; plus it's free!

What do you think would be worse...to have to drive approx. 3 hours with the baby to get to/from the airport but then to get to have a direct flight (on JetBlue, BTW) or to only drive a half hour to/from the airport but have to transfer planes (and have to fly either US Airways or United - both of which charge for even your first checked bag and they suck compared to JetBlue overall, lol)?

Driving TO the airport doesn't bother me, but I feel like I'm gonna wanna die after being "away" with a 3 month old for a week, then flying across the country - the last thing I'll want to do is drive for 3 hours. Especially since the flights back are all landing in the evening (like 10 pm local time, which will feel like 1 am since I'll have just been in Boston). But at the same time, last time I flew US Airways everything got all fudged up and I missed my second flight which I would rather have to drive 3 hours than be stranded in Phoenix with a 3 month old...

Mleh, this is way too complicated!!!

On the plus side, I might get to be home for the Fourth of July which means I might get to be on Cape Cod for the Fourth of July, which means lobster courtesy of my grandfather. Mmmmmmmm...lobster, and crab cakes, and oysters...AND I'LL BE ALLOWED TO HAVE A BEER!!!! ::happy dance::

Any advice/insight is MUCH appreciated.

Oh, and if it matters the flight that is 3 hours away is technically cheaper. But I think after gas and the increased cost of parking (the local airport is super cheap) the cost will be more or less the same.
