When you write that you want to work from home one day a week, do you mean that you dont have childcare in place on that day? What's the reason, exactly?

Honesty is the best policy, so I always recommend that approach, but as an employer, I'd be pretty annoyed that this wasn't brought up before maternity leave began.

I would try working the 4 longer days approach first. My company won't allow you to telecommute unless you have child care in place while you are working. I've been telecommuting full time for almost 3 years now. When I first wanted to go out I put together a proposal/presentation for my boss that included what my work environment would be like at home, what the pros of me going home and how it could benefit the company and then I also made sure to address my solutions to any potential challenges I might have by not being in the office.

Yes, I work from home 10-15 hours and work one 8-10 hour day a week onsite. Virtually none of my work gets done when I am home alone with my son- he keeps me too busy. I get most done after bedtimes and weekends when my husband is home to run interference.

Initially I asked and got turned down, but have worked my way into it. My situation is due to low staff numbers and desperation on my boss's part. They wouldn't allow it if there was a choice. I my one day onsite is teaching, and my time from home is tutoring online, grading papers, and writing curriculum. I make sure that I go above and beyond my duties to keep them happy and keep in close contact with my boss, so as not to appear to take advantage of the situation.

Having a plan ironed out before you have the talk helps- what are your responsibilities and expectations and what can you get done from home vs. onsite. Write a list of how long it takes you to get each duty done a week and how often.

I am the same way. i was due in late april so i November/December i started asking questions about part-time and possible work from home(it wasn't set up or anything, but there were 'rumors' that it was coming). i just said i needed to know my options and 'do what's best for my family'. i know it sounds horrible, but i made it sound like i wouldn't be coming back if i couldn't work from home(and i'm not saying you should do that!). my work was very accomodating and i work from home 3 days a week and they let me keep DS home with me(most companies don't allow you to have your children at home with you, because working from home isn't a 'child care solution' <--that's what our contract said, but they let me do it no problems because i get my work done and then some...)

good luck. and it really never hurts to ask

It is a tough request, but something to ask, you've got nothing to lose!

I work from home 1x a week (pre pregnancy) and in recent months have been working from home 2-3x a week for doc appts, etc. My boss has been really flexible because I worked my butt off for her the last year+ and also, she wants the pregnancy to be as smooth as possible for me; so the support has been really nice.

I plan on formerly asking for a second work from home day for after maternity leave in the next month or so; but with the fact that my mom would be our "nanny" and I will actually not be watching baby/working from home.

What are your reasons for wanting to work from home and why do you think they may not allow it?

Would your baby be with you during the day from home? Is there a way you could work 10 hour days over 4 days and have the 5th day "off".

Hi Ladies... I need your help/advice.

I work for a big corporation and my maternity leave ends in 5 weeks. As far as I know, I have not heard of anyone in the company working from home. Because of our daycare situation, I would like to ask my boss if it would be possible to work from home one day a week. I am not the most confrontational person and knowing that I am asking for something like this makes me very nervous. But I have to do it because it is for my baby. My question is has anyone in my situation done this and how successful were you? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
