I'm a fan of Abi. My spanish speaking newphew calls his grandmother Abi instead of Abu because the grandmother though Abu was too grandmothery.

@adnama: OMG that is so cute!

I like the name-play suggestions. Or pop-pop for your mom's husband... or maybe abuelita or just lita for your FIL's wife?

One of my grandmothers went by her first name: So she was Grandma Sally to us. "grandma" and "grandpa" were reserved for the grandparents we were closer to.

I wish i had better suggestions! My MIL goes by Mimi

@tororojo: Oooh I like Tita (My spanish is not amazing so didnt realize that was short for abuelita)
It might be easily confused with teta though ;) but I still like it.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!
I'm definitely wanting something more similar to a nickname.
I like the Gigi & Sassy nicknames for MIL, although hoping for something a little more Spanish-sounding. Abuela is the spanish name for Grandma. Maybe Abi?

For my stepfather I want to avoid anything sounding like grandpa, and nothing too close to Papi (as that will be baby's dad). His name is Steve....but cant think of any nicknames based on that.

@adnama: If only my stepfathers name was Dave! I love that!! gran-dave!

Could the 30 yr old MIL go by Tita (short for Abuelita?)--or will MIL get called Abuelita more than Abuela?

Could your mom's husband go by Grandfather/Grandpops/Pop/Papa/Grandaddy...something similar to but not the same as what your dad will be called?

DH's step-mom is grandma "insert name", his dad is grandpa whereas mine is grand dad, my mom is nana and DH's mom is grandma. It was just what came natural.

There are plenty of good grandparent names suggested here, and I think the key is just to let your parents (and DH's) have first dibs, and then the steps can decide what they want to be called once the rest has been decided.

Growing up, although I didn't have any step-grandparents, I did love having four separate names for my grandparents (Gram, Nana, Grampy and Papa) rather than Grandma First Name.

DH's nephews call his step-Mom, Lili. Pronounced LeeLee, based on her name Lisa. DH's Mom passed away before we met but DH and my SIL still/want to refer to her as Grandma. Esp since she was around when the 1st nephew was born.

I think that you best bet is coming up with something based on their names. Gigi is a great option for your FIL's wife if you can't think of anything based on her name

I think when we have kids they will call my step-dad Gran-dave! That's his name so I find it perfect/hilarious. That way my dad can still be grandad.

My mom feels too young to be called grandma (she's only 47) so she asked to be called Nana.

As for grandfathers, maybe call one grampy? That's what we called my dad's dad. My parents are divorced too and I don't think I would ever want LO to call their SOs grandma or grandpa!

What about Poppa or something for your mom's husband. I understand why you wouldn't want him to be grandpa.

For your FILs wife - I think there are lots of cutesy names, GiGi or something. My friends MIL wasn't ready to be a grandma so she is "Sassy". Her other grandmother is Neena.

I thought a lot about this too, because I though my parents and DH's parents should have different names. Kids are pretty clever though, they come up with their own names. DH called his Grandpa's second wife (who was the same age as his mother) Grandma Firstname, she was fine with it.

I think it's cute when kids call grandmother, stepgrandmother, etc. "Gigi" or "Mimi".
Do they have names that could be made into a cute nickname?

Both SO and I come from divorced families. My mother has remarried, as has his father. The other two parents are single.

At the beginning of my pregnancy, my mother started referring to her husband as a "Grandpa."

Mom's husband and I have not had the best relationship - he treated her poorly when I was in high school. They divorced once and then remarried a few years later. Our relationship has gotten better though and I respect him for making my mom happy now.

I know it would upset my father (who I love dearly) if my son were to call Mom's husband Grandpa. He's been looking forward to the day he can be Grandpa and I don't want to deprive him of that. I told mom something along those lines, and said we'll have to come up with another name for her husband.

As far as my in-laws: My father in law married a woman my age. I understand that MIL doesnt mind sharing "Abuela (Grandma)", I don't think my 30 year old step mother in law wants to be referred to as Grandma.

I know eventually my child will come up with names for them eventually, but I will have to refer to them as something when I talk to my child.

So:

Any suggestions on names for:

Mothers Husband (Older American but don't want to disrespect my dad)
FIL's Wife (30 year old Peruvian)

It feels awkward and tricky and I don't want it to be, but dont want to call them by their first names either.
