@mrskc: this exact thing happened to me! I met the backup doula, and while I would have been fine with her at my birth, I was very glad that I didn't go into labour until after my doula was back from vacation. I'd ask to meet the backup just to see if you click!

@spaniellove: ok I think I will ask her to meet her back up doula. I just didn't know if it would be weird if I asked her for recommendations if I decided I didn't want to hire her.

I think it would be a great idea to meet the backup doula and also ask your old doula for a few recommendations. I had a hard time finding the right person and ended up finding my doula through recommendations from another doula who was having a baby just before my due date. If there were certain things you liked about your doula, it's possible that she could think of other doulas with similar qualities.

@wonderstruck: I'm due Aug 16 and she'll be gone Aug 2-12. I had DS 11 days early.

I think it's totally acceptable to ask to meet the backup doula, considering that there's most definitely a chance you'd end up using her. How close to the due date are the 10 days, and did your first child come early?

Ok so I used this doula when I had DS and I loved her! She did such a great job. I just contacted her to be my doula for baby #2 BUT she's going to be out of the country for 10 days right before my due date. :(

She said I could still hire her knowing that it's possible I will get her back up doula.

I'm torn now. I'm not sure if I should just look for a new doula that I know would most likely be the one that will attend the birth or hire the doula I used before.

Would it be ok for me to ask to meet my old doula's back up doula? Also, if I decide not to hire her, is it ok that I ask her for recommendations? Or is that a no no?
