The Moana Surfrider is a lovely hotel on Waikiki. Despite being surrounded by the bustle of the city, the beach side is very peaceful.

Great combination of beaching, relaxing and shopping :)

We used this site to book an ocean front condo for a week! http://www.waikikioceanfrontrentals.com/

depends on what you are looking for--something away from the hustle and bustle, or something where there is a lot to do within walking distance? kailua and kaneohe have some nice vacation homes for different price ranges, it's quiet and more residential. there are nice homes as well in north shore and haleiwa, but definitely do your research for these areas. these areas are generally close to beaches. they are all also away from the main town, honolulu, so you will need a rental car if you want to get around. i like vrbo and homeaway websites.

waikiki is renowned for being busy and "central", with lots and lots of restaurants, hotels, shopping, and the beach a block or a few blocks away, no car needed really unless you want to explore the islands, but most places will charge you for parking per day. but being "central", it can be crowded and noisy. i personally like being surrounded by restaurants and shopping, so i like staying in waikiki. there aren't really any houses available though, mostly studios, 1 or 2 bedroom units.

good luck, oahu is a great place to relax!

My family is planning a vacation to Oahu for next spring. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to stay? We might end up renting a house, so if you could recommend which part of the island to look at, that would be great!
