Oh, I've caught the little bugger sucking happily on his hands while he's awake. Thumb and index fingers taste delish! When he was younger, the look of euphoria on his face when he got his hands into his mouth convince me that he's gonna suck his thumbs. Middle of the night cooing (we co-sleep) means he's busted out and is happily awake sucking on hands. I can even hear the sucking over the white noise sometimes. Can any mommas or papas weigh in on when their suckers learned to sleep with thumbs in mouth?

LO rarely takes a paci, but sucks/chews on her thumb during the day. She needs to be swaddle weaned, and I was hoping she could self-soothe with her thumb, but she doesn't seem to be interested. I think its less of a soothing thing for her and more of just something to do.

We have the same problem! Our LO's are about the same age & I try to let her suck on her hands instead but she won't fall asleep without the paci. It's so hard because I know she could self soothe, just have to wait until she can put it in her mouth on her own

I agree that he might not necessarily be a thumb sucker--chewing on hands is developmental. As for the paci, you can try a wubbanub which might help the paci stay in better. We paci weaned when we swaddle weaned at 5 months, and I introduced a lovey at that point to help him self soothe.

I don't think he'll necessarily be a thumb sucker, unless he's starting to do it already now. He'll probably just be interested in the paci.

I don't have advice about weaning from it, though. :/

I need some advice...
If LO's paci isn't in his mouth while he's napping, he cries bloody murder until I pop it back in. While he's awake, he chews and sucks on his hands but when he's sleeping/trying to sleep, his hands at his face just wake him up (possibly due to lack of coordination and knocking the paci out without being able to replace it with his hand). So at 19 weeks, he's swaddled to keep his hands away from his face. I've figure he's going to be a thumb sucker in the future and though I'd prefer if he didn't, I've resigned myself to it. Do I just have to wait until he's more coordinated in getting his thumb into his mouth? Any other tips in weaning from either the paci or swaddle?
