No advice for @Smurfette: but congratulations on reaching your goal! Just thought I would pipe up and say for @Bookish: and @Mrs. Blue: that we use the Target brand and it has worked great for us, better than Gerber good start. They sell it by the case online only and it is even a bit cheaper than in-store (plus free shipping!)

@Smurfette: Congrats on meeting your goal!! 6 months is my goal as well, so I'll have to revisit your thread when I stop pumping.

@Mrs. Blue: If you do switch, let us know how you like the Target brand. LO occasionally supplements with Enfamil newborn and it's so expensive! I guess all formula is, but I'd rather pay less if it's the same thing!

Congrats on making it to your goal! I would say that the easiest way would be to wean the pumping sessions first, and then pick night or am and then just do the opposite and then be done. It's important to consider that as you wean, you will have more of those engorged feelings, and it's easiest to have your last sessions fairly spaced out (like am and pm) so you aren't feeling uncomfortable. Good luck mama! We support you :)

@Smurfette: Finn is on Neosure (high calorie preemie formula), and now E is on the regular Similac Advanced. I'm actually thinking of trying the Target brand ,though, because I've compared the nutrition info and it's identical to Similac or Enfamil in every category . . . And WAY cheaper. :)

@Mrs. Blue: She has been farting a lot lately but does on the days she doesn't get formula. We stopped her reflux medicine but she is still spitting up but I figured it was from teething cause she doesn't seem in pain.

What kind do y'all use?

@Smurfette: Well, sometimes changing formula may cause more gas, different poo, tummy issues, and mkst importantly for us, can effect reflux (not sure if R still has any reflux issues). So, everything I've read says to give it at least two weeks. When we have switched (had to a couple times), mostly it's been fine, but on one formula, LO had more gas and spit-up for 3-4 days. Probably won't have any issues, especially if you just slowly drop feedings, but I thought it was worth throwing out there. :)

P.S. Not pumping anymore is pretty awesome!

@Smurfette: No More Milk tea help me dry up really well. I got it off of Amazon. Also, I second the cabbage leaves and allergy medicine.

But, I also vote for not pumping, but nursing, if you like it. It would be a good way for your body to adjust to missing the pumping sessions. I would personally hate pumping, so kudos to you for doing it for so long! You did a great job!

@Smurfette: Congratulations for reaching 6 months! I stopped at 3 months and I was having such a hard time with PPD and I just wanted to be done so, despite my best intentions, I pretty much went cold turkey. I would definitely NOT advise doing that :). I somehow didn't get mastitis but I felt really really horrible. I think that taking Sudafed a few times a day for a few days helped. I also did the cabbage leaves in the bra. I don't know if that helped but I suppose they were kind of soothing out of the fridge. Good luck and congratulations for reaching your goal!

@Smurfette: Congrats on 6 months! That's huge. Also, how in the world are the kiddos 6 months this week. Little bit of sad face over here.

I went down gradually, which I imagine helps to prevent engorgement pain, mastitis, etc. I think your plan sounds great. Also, know that it can take a couple weeks for a baby to adjust to formula, so give R some time if the first few days if it doesn't seem to be going well.

@travellingbee: Yup! I could have probably even gone longer. My body adjusted just fine to "re-filling" every 12 hours or so. My only problem was on weekends when she would want to nurse mid-day. We just got her in a routine that nursing was just for bed time.

@T.H.O.U.: sorry for threadjacking but I'm really curious about this. I was hoping to stop pumping at work at 9 months and just bf morning and night but my SIL said she tried this and her supply dried right up. But you were able to make this work for another six months?

@T.H.O.U.: I have thought about that as well, which is why I am going to drop the night session last. I secretly do love that I am the one the has to do bedtime cause after nursing she is so cuddly that I hate having to put her down awake. I just want to rock her asleep.

Yea for making it to your goal! I know what a PITA pumping is!

I would go gradual for sure. Less of an issue for you and her.

Do you enjoy nursing? I found that I was willing to go another 6 months when I wasn't having to pump at work and I just nursed morning and night. It became a nice bonding experience and not a chore. Not trying to pursuade you, but if you can go gradual and just do what works for you (aka no pumping) then it may be a different scenario.

@Smurfette: Congratulations on making it 6 months! It's 3 months longer than I made it, and it was tough for me to get to 3 months. So I very much admire you for making it to 6!

I agree with others that cold turkey will be hard. I gradually weaned myself exactly how you did. Give yourself a few days once you eliminate a nursing session and replace it with a bottle so that your body gets used to skipping that time of day. As you eliminate a nursing/pumping session every few days, your body will start to adjust and eventually, you'll be fully weaned! PM me if you want some details regarding my experience!

It's YOUR choice and you did AWESOME to make it to six months, especially given all the challenges (and all the clogged ducts)! And R is obviously totally fine taking a bottle and has no issues with formula, so at least you don't have to worry about that! I'm wishing you a smooth and painless weaning process!! <3

My thoughts are.. (1) Congratulations on making it 6 months! Such an accomplishment! (2) You probably shouldn't quit cold turkey.. That just sounds like a recipe for mastitis. I think you plan of gradually dropping sessions sounds good. That could probably be sped up with some cold meds + peppermint tea.. I've also read that cabbage leaves work well.. Put them. In the freezer, then place them in your bra at night. You might smell like a salad for a week, but whatevs! Good luck with the weaning process!
