We switched D's 1 at 20 to a floor bed. It was a non-issue. We had nothing in his room and he just stayed in his bed and slept them waited on his bed for us to get him in the morning. He did this for 5 months.

We switched ds2 to a low double bunk around 18 months because he was crying a lot and we thought he might like a bed better. He started in his bed for a few nights before learning he can play in his room forever before sleeping. Now he sleeps everywhere, most frequently in his rocking chair. We just move him back to his bed before we go to bed. He is more of a night owl than his brother but they both go in their rooms at the same time and go to sleep when they are ready.

We did a lot like gingerbebe, making the room minimal and childproofed. My first transitioned to the floor bed easily. My second scoots off a lot more in the night, but I don’t worry since the carpet is thick. I wouldn’t be comfortable putting pillows.

My advice is to basically treat her whole room like a crib. So basically treat it like a prison cell. We took everything out of DS1's room, locked his closet door, put a doorknob cover to prevent him from getting out, and wall mounted his monitor camera and white noise machine.

When he first transitioned from the crib, we put him in a Privacy Pop tent with a mattress inside (basically an enclosed floor bed) because it gave the secure feeling of a crib. We zipped it up and he basically just went to sleep. A few months after he turned 3, he started taking his damn pull-up off in bed! He would never call for us to take him to the potty and he wasn't ready for the freedom to leave his room at night, so we got rid of the tent, moved a potty seat into his room, and transitioned him to the Ikea Kura bed with the big house canopy tent. He's 3.5 and still sleeps in his "house." We still have to keep everything out of his bedroom so he doesn't mess around in there (he just has a few books, some stuffed animals, and a puzzle or two), but that's how we did it.

I wouldn't worry too much about falling out. We took the front off DD's crib and she fell a few times. Sometimes she'd wake and cry and we'd put her back, but most of the time she just slept through! We'd put a pillow or two on the floor to cushion the fall sometimes.

All that to say, no real advice on the transition, but don't sweat it too much!

We moved our son to a floor bed, very early on, probably around 14/16 months (I can't remember). It mainly happened because I was still nursing and co-sleeping at night with him some. We use these still, he is 27 months (https://www.amazon.com/2-Pack-hiccapop-Bumpers-Toddler-Water-resistant/dp/B01DTBFB5U/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1524767520&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=bumper+bed&psc=1).

He basically transitioned to it with me sleeping with him so it was very easy and he is still on a floor bed with no plans to put a frame on it. Only thing that becomes tricky as they get older, they will realize they can get out of their room. We continue to deal with this on and off.

Our daughter is 18 months old and we're expecting #2 in 3 months. She's started to climb up on the side of her portable crib a bit and onto her highchair, etc, so I'm sure that scaling her crib rails is not far behind... besides which, in all honesty, we'd love to avoid having to get a second crib.

Our plan was to transition her from her crib onto a floor bed (twin sized mattress) and then eventually pop the mattress into a bed frame once she's old enough and has figured out how not to fall out! She doesn't particularly like going to bed, but generally sleeps well though the night once she's gotten over her initial fit about having to go to sleep in the first place. One thing I am a bit concerned about is that she tends to migrate around her crib quite a bit... not sure if it's just as she's falling asleep, or whether she does this all night, but she's never in the same spot in the morning.

Any advice on how to go about the transition? Experiences with it from anybody who has already gone through this?
