I'm no help...I am from the middle-east where they have never heard of child safety laws or car seats so excuse me for being flabbergasted at your request. Over there you just grab your kid in your lap and tell the taxi to drive! before another tourist tries to take it from under you.

@jholler25: That's really interesting, I had no idea this kind of program existed! I think my parents have State Farm, I have to check, because it's good just to have an extra seat available, esp. for later, when you're car pooling and stuff!

I paid about $30 for my Scenera, the color was being discontinued.

So I have not verified this yet, but will in the next couple of months....My grandmother has State Farm Insurance for her vehicles, and according to her and my mom, State Farm will provide a car seat for a $25 copay in order to promote safety. As cheap as it is, I didn't really think too much about it because we need a specific carseat for our stroller, so I kind of forgot about it. And then recently I realized that I need to get my MOM to get the $25 car seat and leave it there for when we visit.

So if possible, maybe check with your auto insurance and see if they provide anything like a certain carseat for a copay or a discount?

ETA: My mom sent me this link to the order form for the carseat from my Grandma's insurance....It's the Cosco one that is not really raved about here, but I'll do it just to have one at my mom's house.
http://www.msfb.com/Member_Benefits/child%20safety%20seat.aspx

Sooooo hopefully a lot of insurance company's do this but it's probably not for cool ones like Chicco Keyfits and Maxi Cosi:)

I have a Cosco Scenera and I dislike it a lot! It's really difficult to get a good rear facing install and I even find it difficult to install well with a seat belt forward facing.

The Graco MyRide is a good choice.

@heatherloveskenny @Mrsdaredevil recommended the Safety 1st convertible car seat that you can buy at Costco. I am going to check it out today!

My ILs have the Cosco Scenera for grandkids. It's highly rated for a low price. Though, I don't know if it would work for Olive.

I need to have two car seats shipped to my mom's house so we can use them for our upcoming trip. We will leave the car seats there for whenever we visit.

All car seats are safe since they have to pass the same tests, so I'm looking for an affordable convertible car seat for Olive, and a regular car seat for Charlie. Do you have one that you love?
