@MamaG: I hated the gowns too. They always rode up which didn't work for my little winter babies.

@Mrsbells: If you haven't already, sign up for Carter's emails (or search retailmenot.com) for coupons.

Thanks everyone... I'll keep checking the Carters site to see if their deals beat what I already get at Kohls. I'll take a look at Old Navy too

Oh, and I personally didn't like those gown things, I re-gifted every one of them that I received to another mom who liked them. They just didn't work for me and my kids.

I didn't have any sets like that. But generally I really like Carters and Old Navy for onesies. I really liked Old Navy for soft pants (bought a few from the boys section for my girls, I liked the banded ankles). I really like the sleepers from Old Navy for newborns/infants. Once we moved past ON sizes in the sleepers, I really like TCP.

A lot of my Carters pieces were either from Carters or Kohls. You have to work both the sales/coupons on them. Likewise for Old Navy and TCP, sales!

Oh, and for my second I got a fair number of solid onesies from Target.com (weren't available in the store) and they might have been Circo branded (and they still seem to have some! http://www.target.com/p/circo-baby-girls-5-pack-bodysuit-pink/-/A-50360424). I liked that they were fairly plain and I could pair them or layer them easily.

Most definitely Carter's (or Carter's at Target). The Carter's website has 50% off sales all the time and will frequently send out 20% off coupons that stack, plus you get $10 off for every $75 that you spend. I saved a lot from DD1 and it all washed well and is very soft. You won't find a single big set like that, but most of their stuff from a particular season matches or coordinates.

@Truth Bombs: and I stop at gap every time I go to the mall because there are always sales going on where clearance is also 30-50% off of clearance price! i can always get better baby gap prices in store than online.

I love the Baby Gap "favorite" pieces for layette. Basics that are high quality and easy to mix and match. I buy when they are having a 40% off sale and don't think the prices are bad.

I didn't get any full sets. I pieced things together from consignment sales, gifts, and places like Target or the outlet mall.

Honestly, they grow SO fast we did a lot of consignment stores where I could look for higher end brands at similar prices.

@ShootingStar: maybe its because I have a card at kohls (up to 30% off) and get tons of coupons but everything works out to much cheaper. I typically only buy sets that come out to be in the $10 range each

@Mrsbells: Kohls seems like a lot more. At Kohls a 5 pack of short sleeve onesies is $26, buy one get one half off. So if you got 2 packs to qualify for the sale it would be $39 or $3.90/ piece.

The same set is at Carters for $15.60. If you spend $50 you can use a 20% coupon. (Or you can use 15% off any amount.). I like to buy a bunch of things at once so I'd use the 20% and make the total for the onesies $12.48 or ~$2.50/piece.

We didn't bother buying sets. Better to mix and match so you get only the stuff you really need. As others have mentioned, Carters has extremely good sales, you just need to wait for them. They frequently put everything on sale, and then there is usually a coupon to stack on top of that. I would never pay more than 50% retail on anything from them directly (and often you can do even better). Old Navy and Gap also have very frequent sales of 40% off, which can usually stack with sale prices.

Carter's is one of those weird places where you have to know how the sales work. I'd never ever buy so much as a sock at full price. You can typically get a sale and then layer a coupon to bring the price right around Target pricing or better.

I've seen sets like that on Amazon, particularly in the deals section. You might also be able to put together a similar set for a good price at a mom to mom sale or consignment shop. Newborn stuff doesn't typically take much of a beating.

where do you get good infant layette sets? They all see so expensive! Last time I got this Garanimals set from walmart, its good value although the quality isnt the softest. My only hesitation is that there are so many long sleeved pieces in the set and it will be really warm so I'd rather buy a set with more short sleeves.
