@Mrs. Train: LOL, I'm a little too. Nothing worse than hearing an odd noise when you are home alone with the kids.

We have a night light in the hallway, his room, and his bathroom. We also pull the curtain over because he doesn't like the dark from his closet.

We have to leave the hall light on and his door open. If it's completely dark he freaks out.

My son just turned 4 and went through this a while ago. He asks that we turn on the lights in his room when he sleeps and we do and it doesn't bother him to sleep through the night. However, our bigger problem now is that he doesn't want to sleep alone and my husband ends up sleeping with him everynight.....but I digress....I guess that's a whole other issue.....but to answer your question I do think it is very common and an actual fear.

Row has recently been turning the light on after I leave his room. At first I fought it, but if it helps him go to sleep I'm all for it now. I just turn it off when I go to bed.

M has this thing now where she needs lights on in a room even if it's not dark in there. She also went through a brief fear of dark/shadows phase when she was about 2.5.

This just started for us at 3 1/2. She is all of a sudden afraid of everything. We put a nightlight in, leave her door open until she falls asleep, and we've made monster spray. Seeing her spray under her bed and in the closet was cute, she was very serious about it and the "scent" I'm using is Breathe Easier so as an added benefit I'm hoping less colds.

My son also sleeps with a lamp on. If he needs to go to his room when it's dark out, he has to make sure all the hallway lights are turned on first.

My son has recently become scared of dark rooms or hallways in the house saying there is a big bear in there. Not sure where he got that, probably a book or movie or school..... But at night he sleeps in complete darkness. I found any light in there and he won't sleep through the night.

My older lo did the same in her 3s. At almost 4 and a half she still either has a lamp or bright night light. She's always been prone to night terrors and we found if she could have enough light to immediately orient herself she calmed down quickly but if it was dark when she had one, even if we got there quick to turn on the light, she was already past the point of quickly calming down. She also usually has a flashlight on her dresser.

Our 3 year old has recently had a huge increase in fear. She hates the dark and needs us to turn lights on for her. She sleeps with a light on in her room. Anyone else have a child who is afraid of the dark?
