@Greentea: We live in California where its currently pretty balmy and it doesn't seem to make a difference! My son has been sick nonstop since the week before Christmas (when we started taking him for transitional playdates). He's technically okay for daycare right now, but he's had a runny nose for almost 2 months straight. DS started daycare full-time in January at 16 months and its been driving me bananas because I'm 6 months pregnant and DH and I have been catching EVERYTHING he brings home. Thankfully the flu vaccine seems to be working this year, but he brought home a virus last month that had the adults FLAT on our backs for 2 weeks straight. And we're sick again with like the 5th virus this year. DS wont even recover fully from one before he gets another one and as a family, we've only managed to go to church once or twice so far in 2016.

@2littlepumpkins: Its just a matter of WHEN the constant illness will be more convenient to deal with. We didn't have a choice about when to start daycare with DS (grandma/nanny quit suddenly), but I'm so pissed we had to start him at the height of cold/flu season, which is exactly when DH and I's work schedules are the busiest. All my friends with kids who stayed at home until preschool have told me its been BRUTAL for them - seriously, one mom told me to start saving my PTO and vacation time now because she and her husband burned through ALL of theirs the first year their oldest was in preschool (because the younger kid also got sick and had to stay home from daycare, etc).

@Greentea: we are on our third cold since Christmas and I was getting so excited last week getting into a routine of kid activities now that my son is older and needs that type of stimulation. I don't know if we should quit going till respiratory season is over! I am so sick of boogers!

@regberadaisy: I'm scared to start working even though I REALLY want to. These illnesses are things that go on for weeks where she's running fevers above what preschool would even allow. Someone would be called to pick her up. Dh would still be the breadwinner so I'd be fired so quick. :/

@erinbaderin: I usually wouldn't, but she ran fevers the majority of the past month, has been on antibiotics (eta, meaning, so she's still experiencing some side effects and stomach upset from that on top of her cold), and was almost hospitalized. I've barely been able to leave the house. I feel like she just needs to get actually well before bringing the next thing home. With her large school it's not a question of this week or next week, it's like will she make it four days into the week or just one? Plus we are ALL sick. Dh has something for work that he needs to be in very good shape in, so he's been trying to start exercising but it's impossible when the kids get up every 15-30 minutes (not even exaggerating) the first half of the night and then he gets sick on top of that. I just can't take another thing coming home this week.

It isn't your fault. We really struggle with this too. DD gets sick every time we do a kid activity. Not sure there is a way to prevent it other than not going. I taught 4yo school and was sick, very sick, constantly. I had a nurse when I was pregnant tell me every time she took her kids to a kid thing they got sick- I remember hoping it wasn't true. DD won't start school until baby 2 is over a year- at least that's the plan. I dream of moving to a warm place... what else can be done?

Ugh, I feel for you! Do you think you can keep her at home for a few more weeks until the weather warms up? Spring is coming, hopefully soon!

We pulled DS out of day care for the month after he got us all sick again. The baby is just six months old and she's already had three nasty colds, with fevers and pink eye and stuff. Now DS is kind of bored and I'm so tired, but at least the kids aren't coughing... but we only have the option because I'm still on leave (and when I go back to work in two weeks, DH will take over for me for a while).

I noticed that when the kids stop putting so many things in their mouths, the illnesses go down. The first year my son was in daycare at age 2, he got so many colds and I attribute that to the toys they were playing with as well as the general way kids are at that age, lots of touching each other, etc.

Is this her first winter in school? The first one is brutal. For what it's worth it gets better around March and this will be the worst one - my son was out sick at least once every two weeks all last winter but this winter he's only missed one day (and that was an ear infection, which I'm pretty sure isn't daycare's fault). That being said, I obviously don't know how sick she is and what's wrong with her, but keeping her out for a full extra week because she isn't 100% seems like it might be excessive?

Ugh, I feel ya. This winter has been soooo rough for colds with my LO. He's been sick off and on since Christmas. We are home this week because some lovely family decided to ruin our Mexican vacation by bringing a toddler with hand foot and mouth (they told us he had it.... But was "over it") So we flew home with 102 temperature and a sad miserable rashy baby. Thanks random family. :crying:

I know the feeling. When LO gets home, as extreme as it sounds..take her clothes off and change her, wash her hands. That's what I do with my LO, at least I figure I'm minimizing some germs she's carrying around the house.

It sucks but it's just kinda the way. Both girls were seemingly sick ALL the time the first year of daycare. DH had it the worst. The girls would have sniffles and he would get a full blown cold. Unfortunately, pulling them isn't an option since we both WOH FT.

That first year in school is so hard! FWIW, DD was in daycare starting at 7 months until 17 months and I breastfed her the whole time. She was sick every other week when she started in fall. Now at 2, she neverrrrrr get sick and when she does, it lasts for like a day! Power through, it will get better!!

I understand too. It sucks. And getting the newborn sick is awful too. Why not just keep her out for a while until you regain your sanity? Do you lose tuition money or anything? If you can manage it, why not? Regroup, and wait until you're ready to face it again.

I can understand this! We have had so many winter illnesses, it's driving me crazy! And she isn't in school yet it's just from regular activities I guess. and we have a newborn who of course I'm trying to keep healthy- I'm proud she made it to 7 weeks before her first cold.

It's tough. I feel like it's been an extra bad winter in terms of illnesses- or maybe now that she's doing more at 2.5 she's just bringing more home, I don't know. But I'm over it.

Ugh, the cold and flu season is so hard. Their little immune systems do toughen up though. I've been washing DD's hands right before preschool and right after. I tell her to not to touch her face as well.

Hopefully it will pass soon! If it makes you feel better, my second LO has a great immune system because of all the preschool germs her big brother came home with during her first year of life! Maybe it'll be the same for you guys?!

Because she's been sick so much. We almost faced a hospital admission because it took her so long to recover this time. (And ds was hospitalized as a newborn for something she brought home too.) And of course dh and ds (4m) and I have been sick too. In the past month or so we spent the vast majority home bound with fevers and I've had to drop a class. I'm exhausted in a way I couldn't imagine before having a second! And dh only just went back to work. I know her immune system gets better with every illness but I'm at home now only with three classes and it's like we send her a couple days then she's out a week sick. Ugh I know partly this is from keeping her in a bubble her first year (thanks to all the people who said she'd be doomed because bf'ing didn't work out and my irrational fear she was somehow deficient and couldn't get sick because of that!) (eta, and it's not like she's never been sick before. She's been in other activities and we were always at the park after that first year...it just used to mostly be minor colds and now it's been way worse.)

I'm definitely keeping her out this week because she STILL isn't 100% after two weeks at home. But I am reluctant to take her back at all.

Anyone else?
