You could also get them a guidebook for the countries they're going to that include pictures and information about the different animals they'll be seeing (disclaimer: I'm a pretty big nerd so I loved reading about the history and other things to see there in addition to the animal facts). </p> <p>You could also make them a 'survival kit' that includes insect repellent with Deet, sunscreen, water purification tablets (or a purifying wand, I think it uses UV light to kill all microorganisms in the water and is very handy to have), mini flashlights, batteries, rain coats (if they don't already have them), quick dry towels if they're going to be camping at all. My IL's went to Africa 3 years ago and my FIL had the hardest time sleeping because he said the "sounds of the African wilderness at night was traumatizing".
