We mostly had cats and one small dog though. With one of our dogs, they had him cremated by himself and we buried his ashes in the backyard. Not sure if everywhere does that or what but I guess it wouldn't feel that special to me. My parents have a little bit of land, and it's where we felt the pets would want to be. When our last family pet had to be put to sleep, they really wanted to have him cremated and brought home, but they were told that the place that does it waits until they have a few pets to be cremated, and they do them all together so then you would have mixed ashes. I heard if you have to put your dog down (here anyway) it costs a lot more money to get the body back than it does to have them cremated and given back to you that way.
