i would love to have a nanny/babysitter/grandparents so that LO would get a change of scenery from school and more individualized attention until i got home, but likely we will do before and after care programs. i haven't done the full research, but i imagine it will be cheaper.

DD is in grade one and we use the YMCA, which has a room within her school, for after-care. I'm able to drop her to her classroom in the morning. I didn't like them at first b/c I'm picky about by whom and how my child is cared for, but I've learned to like them :silly:

The Y is expensive here though!

ETA: DD is only there for a max of 20 mins after school, until I can get her.

I have a feeling my kids going to have lots of after school activities and a nanny would be needed to act like a shuttle service.

My DD goes to after care (on-site at the school) once or twice a week depending on what is going on. Her program doesn't "help" with homework per se. They just have a table for homework where kids are supposed to be quiet. The program also asked us to fill out a form about homework preferences. e.g. is she supposed to work on Math homework, or supposed to do as much homework as possible while there, etc. Kids also have to sign a "contract" saying they are going to work on the homework. As far as I have seen, none of the teachers actually follow up and make sure the child works on homework.. luckily my DD is very obedient.

@mediagirl: DS is only in 1st grade but so far homework takes about 5 mins max. They can choose to do homework in after care but they wont make them and DS doesn't want to. I actually prefer him to run around at after care and burn off some energy so when we get home he can easily sit for 5 mins and do his homework while I make dinner. He doesn't need help with it either.

I am sure as he gets older he may require help and homework will take longer but for now its not an issue.

@mediagirl: Yes I believe our school program has a homework time. I'm not sure its mandatory though and there isn't really assistance. So my nieces and nephews still ended up with homework after dinner.

With a nanny I think they came home, had snack, did a required 30 minutes of homework or reading and then could go play or do games.

@mediagirl: most of the aftercare programs that my niece and nephews have gone to help with homework. Even if it's not through the school. I'm sure not all of them do it but I think a lot do!
Yeah, my one brother doesn't get home till 8pm and before they started aftercare he would have to help them with their homework and check it. Some nights they were still up at 10:30! :(

ETA: the ones at the school are nice because they're typically one of the teachers in their grade. So they would do a cursory check over before the kids are allowed to go play.

@regberadaisy: that's one thing I'm stressing about - homework. Do they do it at aftercare and then it's finished by the time they get home? I can't imagine getting home at 5:30 and then making her do an hour or so of homework!

For the first summer (summer between K and 1) she will go back to the preschool.

But summers after that she probably will do the program at the school because it will be all her friends and they do a good job with field trips and stuff.

For the general school year, we are looking at options, again, I think for K the afternoon program is separated from the older kids so it might be ok. After that we may want her to come home and relax with a nanny.

In my dream world, my ILs will watch them after school. 😂 Or it would be awesome if I can work longer hours some day and pick them up 2-3x a week.
The reality is probably some kind of aftercare program that helps with homework and gives them outdoor play time.

We do before and after care at the school for DS - DD is still in DCP so they will both continue to do that for summer programs for the next 2 years - after that I need to find something else

Once your child is in Elementary school, how will do you aftercare for before/after school and during summers/track-out?

We will probably do programs through the YMCA or through the school. I haven't done the full research yet.
