As a night nurse ( L&D and postpartum) it's the one thing I always feel so guilty about... But per Dr orders and hospital policy we have to do "hourly rounding" and vital signs at certain times. I personally try to cluster all my care... But still have to do something's at later times. I know it can seem annoying but it is a hospital and safety is themain concern.

@nycalimama - At least once overnight would have been great! Mrs. Bee was woken up a million times, and often for reasons that didn't seem medically urgent. And don't get me started on the nurse intercom paging system that meladoriem mentioned!

If a hospital is weighing sleep against safety, then I could accept that. But if a hospital doesn't take sleep into account at all, then I have some serious objections!

In any case, it sounds from the comments like different hospitals handle this very differently... I was just disappointed in our particular hospital!

I don't remember being awoken many times. In fact, I had to ask them to come in to remind me to take my pain meds.

@mrbee your overprotectiveness is admirable and your standpoint on getting as much sleep as possible those first few nights is very valid.

unfortunately from a medical point of view, safety trumps sleep in the hospital.

to answer your ? in the OP, VBAC mamas most certainly should be checked at least once overnight for vitals and a fundal check (making sure the uterus is firm, not boggy -- sign of hemmorhage risk). Your nurse should have told you beforehand though. I agree that that would have been the courteous thing for him/her to do. sorry... you could've also just had a scatterbrained nurse, or a newb nurse who didn't know how to prioritize.

I honestly don't remember them being weird and coming in at all hours. I had a c-section though so when they were in the room I made sure they helped me either go to the bathroom, get me water, change the baby. My husband had to go home both nights to take care of our puppy and try to get some sleep so he could go to work (he's in finance...can't really take a lot of time off so he saved it until I was actually home and needed him).

Huh. Maybe I'm the odd gal out? I didn't get woken up at night. I delivered at 5pm, and fell asleep around 11pm, and woke up at 6am totally confused with life. Though we also told them we planned to bottle feed (which I did until my milk came in) so they let me sleep while they fed the baby. Maybe they drugged me up while I wasn't looking and just don't remember them waking me up? I dunno.

@nycalimama - I have no problems with regular wakeups when someone is recovering from a c-section or heavy bleeding! I just think hospitals might want to rethink taking away the restorative power of sleep from 100% of new moms.

And if they really do have to wake up patients regularly, why not just tell them that. It's a bit silly for each nurse to make a ton of noise coming in, and then loudly ask, "Is mom awake?" Yes, you just woke her up again on purpose, like you've been doing all night!

That said, I am totally aware that I was probably being overly protective because I was the husband of that new mom and I had nothing to do but guard over my mama lion and growl at anyone who bothered her!

I didn't sleep a wink while I was at the hospital. I think I was high off of new mommy drugs. It was annoying how nurses and doctors kept coming into my room. I kept the baby with me, we literally had someone coming in every 2 hours.

yes, dr's orders and hospital policies unfortunately mean that patients will have to be woken up for vitals, meds, and/or physical assessment checks. i bled quite a lot after baby #2's natural birth in a hospital... my blood pressure plummeted, i had the chills, and needed stat lab draws and meds. i didn't mind one bit being woken up a few times during the night to get checked on. from a nurse's perspective it's about safety and being liable. patients can always refuse these things if they don't want to be "bothered".

Well, isn't this a hospital thing? My husband goes to the hospital about 3 times a year for his asthma and he always complains that they wake him up all the time.

I know at our hospital, there are certain times we are supposed to do certain things (vitals, meds passed, physical assessments, IV checks, fundus checks, etc.) and they are pretty strict about them being on time. Like "every 2 hours" or "every 4 hours", but if you have a good nurse, they will try and group these things together to minimize waking you up as much as possible. I know some nurses don't always think that way, but some of it is unavoidable. I always joke with my patients about how you can't get any rest in the hospital. Sad but true.

No, no one came into my room after all the initial test and everything else was done. I actually could have gone home a few hours after I gave birth but my mom came from California to Idaho to see us and they offered to let us stay the night at the birthing center to visit and all that so she didn't have to get a hotel just for the one night. I didn't see any of them til the next morning.

Our hospital was a bit weird and did tests on the babies between 11 pm - 12 am. I have no idea why, the only thing I can think of is most of the women had their babies sleep in the nursery so this was when they were all there. However, I kept little girl in our room so I'd be awake until after midnight, then they made sure I woke up at 3 am to nurse her and then be in at 7 am to draw blood or check on me. So there was not a lot of sleeping in the hospital.

Yes! Not only that, they kept waking the baby up. A nurse came in at 3AM to WEIGH E after she had finally fallen asleep. We were so peeved. And there was an inter-room intercom system that the nurses would constantly use to page each other, even in the middle of the night. So while you were trying to rest, a loud voice would beep in!

YES!!! ahhh!! I was woken up every few hours after a natural birth! It was the worst ever! My husband and I were sooo sleep deprived. Eli was born at 2:11am and we did not get to our room until 5am or so and did not fall asleep until 6am.. then BAM at 7am the nurse is here announcing I have to breastfeed my baby. then they did that every 2-3 hours after that! I could not get any sleep. Meanwhile.. Eli did not want to have anything to do with feeding! All he wanted was sleep :( It was miserable.

For reasons that I'm not entirely clear on, nurses seemed to purposefully wake up Mrs. Bee every few hours for her entire post-childbirth stay.

Often, it seemed like they were waking her up on purpose. I could never figure out what that purpose might be though. With Charlie, they kept saying they were checking out her C-section to see how it was healing. That made some sense, at least.

But Olive was not a C-section, and yet they still woke up Bee constantly. Does anyone know why nurses wake up new moms so much?

Did this happen to anyone else?
