I bought a nightgown and robe from Destination Maternity and I changed into them the next day after my first shower, and it felt SO GOOD. I do love me a hospital johnny (I really do!) but it felt great to get into nice crisp clothes. It looked great in the zillions of pictures Rob Sr. took too. I didn't have a problem with bleeding onto the clothes-- I wore tons and tons of pads and disposable underwear and changed them often.

@winniebee: that's what I wore. Yoga pants, tank top and a cardigan. I was in hospital for 4 nights - standard here - and wanted to feel human.

I just wore the hospital gown because I didn't want to get blood and stuff on my own clothes. I did wear a robe that was gifted to me from a friend and it was a LIFE SAVER. Loved it!

haha I was naked the majority of the time lol
I wanted as much skin-to-skin time with LO as possible, so I only had the mesh panties. When my family came to visit I just threw on one of my loose fitting gap maternity tees.
When I got up to walk around, I just put on my robe.

@artbee: Exactly this. Maybe next time if I don't have such a crappy recovery I'll want them, but I had no interest in changing out of the hospital gown.

When I have been hospitalized for surgeries and stuff before I changed into my own clothes ASAP because I was so much more comfortable in them. I plan on bringing a couple black jersey dresses I already own, plus my nursing PJ's, and yoga pants and nursing tank tops. One of the jersey dresses will be set aside for when we come home, otherwise I should have enough to make a few comfortable outfits.

I brought my own PJ's, but didn't wear them. I was in too much pain to get up and change, especially since I brought pants, and then I'd just have to take them off when the nurse or doctor came to check me. I had a 2nd degree tear so I stayed in bed anyway, so I didn't have to worry about visitors seeing my tush. Plus, there was a lot of bleeding and this way I didn't have to worry about messing up my own clothes.

Next time I'll probably do the same thing and bring some just in case.... but I doubt I'll use them again.

After spending several days in the hospital recently, I decided I'm going to bring loose fitting yoga pants and a nursing tank or two and robe of my own to wear post-birth. I wouldn't want to wear anything other than a hospital johnnie while laboring and during labor, but I also know that the johnnies were ENORMOUS on me and I just won't want to wear them post-birth.

@regberadaisy: yes, i think it is common - from talking to my friends. the photographers are of varying qualities, depending on the hospital, though. mine was pretty good so we purchased the photos. you might want to check if your hospital has one so you can prepare. :-)

With both my babies, I wore the hospital gown until the next morning when I could shower and change into my own clothes. I didn't buy anything new for the hospital, though; just regular old yoga pants and tank tops worked for me.

I'm planning on bring my own pj pants, nursing top and bathrobe but nothing fancy that I would care if it gets ruined. I HIGHLY doubt I will be comfy in the hospital gown.

@Andrea:
Your hospital had a photographer?!?!?

I wore a hospital gown the entire time. I brought a bunch of my own stuff but the only clothing I used was my robe and that was only to cover my backside while I walked the halls early on.

Plus I didn't know that they had a photographer at the hospital so we had him take our photos. If I didn't have my own clothes to wear, I would have looked a hot mess in the photos and instead I looked decent!

I plan to wear the hospital stuff, I dont want to get any stains on my own clothes. And I've been told to expect a lot of post partum bleeding. I have packed some of my own gowns just in case though but I dont expect to wear them.

I've read that some women wear their own nightgowns or pajamas in the hospital after the birth. Part of me thinks I'll feel more comfortable in my own stuff, especially with various family members coming to visit. But part of me thinks why spend extra money on a couple nightgowns I'll probably never wear again.

Did you wear the hospital gown or bring your own stuff for your hospital stay?
