@lilyofthewest: Regional differences are crazy but I'm in the Bay Area so we're not in a low cost region. If we used DH's corporate daycare it would be around $460/wk. We are fortunate that we found the in home daycare we're in. If there had been any centers in our town I would have picked one and spent more money.

Wow, that is nuts! I'm really, really hoping that by the time H is in kindergarten I will be able to either go part time at my current job or find another job with school hours so that I can be home in the afternoon. Our target school system runs 8:30-3:30 for all grades.

@Corduroy: Doing the math on that makes me envious of your regular daycare fees. I pay $305/wk at a "cheap" daycare. Weekly costs up to $470 are not unusual. It always amazes me how much this stuff varies by region...and how much my region is always on the ouch end of the variation!

@Corduroy: I looked at what it costs in my town and doubled it based on the fact that it would need to be more hours to cover part time K and it's still half of what you're being quoted! That seems really expensive.

@Littlebit7: I think we do live in the same town! But the good news is that there are several outside daycares/preschools that offer after school care/summer break/school break care and it's more reasonable than full time daycare. So you do get some child care relief.

And (knock on wood) as long as our town has the free Pre-K 3 and Pre-k 4 programs, then it's still kind of a deal. And we've been really, really pleased with Pre-k 3 this year. It's a great program and we are so lucky in our town to have it.

I'm back home so I have my spreadsheet and the tuition quotes. $8.40/hour <25 hr/wk and $7.80/hour for >25hr/week. Which is weird because 26 hr/wk is the same price as 24 and 27 is the same price as 25.

@Anagram: 5 days a week of Kindergarten with afterschool care would be $1123/month for us before in-service days or holidays. We're looking at $800/mo for 1st grade - a little lower than I originally thought. I guess I should be glad that we've had a deal on daycare preschool all these years at around $900.

@T.H.O.U.: that's comparable to our program. $160/month and includes early release. We are also full day Kinder. So it's for up to 3 hours per day.

We also pay the same in December when we have a two week break and March when we have Spring break. I'm not complaining and greatful for our program.

Yea we aren't out of the child care payments yet either. Even though it's full day K that's only 8-3. So she does after care which is about $175 per month. Not terrible. It does cover early release days which is nice but no other breaks.

@Corduroy: yeah, it sucks. Before and after care (which makes a 7:30-5:30 day) in our town is about $800/month plus you pay extra for school breaks to have "wrap care". Like Spring break is an additional $500 or something. And even though you pay, they have a lot of closed days or early dismissal days. Not great for working parents.

But it's still way cheaper than full time daycare in our town.

@Corduroy: Wow, that's a bummer. I'm sorry. I wonder what other families do, if everyone just doesn't the after care program and sucks it up. That just seems like a high rate for the number of kids that would potentially participate.

@MamaG: The program is paid by the hour. I don't have the sheet in front of me but it's $8 something per hour for less than 25 hours a week and $7something for more than that. Kindergarten is only 3 hours a day. We'll probably need one hour in the morning and 7 and a half (ugh) from 11:30-6. We can probably shave some time off either end. And DH doesn't work Fridays do we only have to do four days a week whereas we've always done five.

Neither of my kids current places do pick up. I haven't found any places that do pickup. One preschool did pick up at a different elementary but they stopped. I'm hoping more businesses open because there's certainly a need in our area.

That's crazy! Before and after care through our town will cost roughly $600/month which blew me away. I mean, it's about half the cost of FT preschool but for as much as people talk about finally being free of daycare payments....well, it doesn't feel very "freeing" to me!! But paying more? Yikes!

@winniebee: The YMCA runs programs in our area but only at the Title 1 schools (high % of low income students). I don't think there's any way to arrange transportation but I'll look into it. I'm hoping in the next year and a half more options open up. My neighbor told me she quit her job because they couldn't afford after school care. I thought she was kidding at the time but I guess not.

A friend gave me the pricing sheet for before/after school care at our local elementary. It blew me away that routine before/after care (not counting holidays and vacations) is going to cost MORE than extended day infant care and preschool. I was already considering private school for Kindergarten to have LO in a more cohesive day long program. Now it's looking like that might be the cheaper option anyway.

The balance tilts back to equal to our current FT daycare/preschool rates for aftercare 1-5th grades. So disheartening. I thought we'd be saving more by then.
