I miscarried after getting off BC. I didn't even have one period first before getting pregnant. My husband and I really believe the BC could have been a factor.

@adira - my cousin miscarried right after stopping bc and she and her husband were convinced it was because of the birth controls, so they stopped taking it altogether.

11 years, Loestrin.... I've been off BC for 14 months and I wouldn't call my cycles completely regular, but close. My cycles have ranged from 28 to 40 days, but 31-33 is the most common. The second cycle was one of the longer ones... My O day seems to keep getting earlier.

To summarize, not totally regular yet after more than a year!

i'm very similar to bluestriped bee-- was on BC for 10+ years (the pill to the patch to the ring), and it took about 3-4 months to regulate, plus I have a long-ass 34 day cycle (but my actual period is still light; only about 3 days).

I once read that your body often ovulates twice in the first cycle after you stop BC because it overcompensates as it tries to produce hormones on its own. I wonder if that can cause eggs to be released that should never be fertilized in the first place?

@adira - there is no science to back up that claim. my ob at the time told me that anecdotally, based on her experience, she'd seen more than average miscarriages with her patients that got pregnant right after going off bcp.

@Mrs. Bee - really??? I asked my doctor when I should go off birth control and she told me to just go off as soon as I want to get pregnant. She didn't mention the miscarry thing... I wonder if it depends on the kind of BC you're on and how much hormones they have.

i took birth control pills for many, many years and my periods were regular as soon as i got off them. then again i only had one period because i got pregnant on my second cycle. i've heard that you're most fertile as soon as you get off bcp, but i've also heard that you're more likely to miscarry then too!

I was on birth control for 4 years, then went off and didn't get a period for 6 months. I saw my dr and was diagnosed with PCOS (although I don't have many of the symptoms other than irregular cycles). I went back on the pill until January and then went off when The Hubs and I decided to TTC. I haven't gotten a cycle yet...

Lord. I was on the verge of ODing on Midol my cramps were so bad my last period. My Gyn. told me once that cramps are a good indication that you ovulated, but I'm definitely not convinced that's the case.

I stopped my BC over a year ago and it took about 3 months for me to get back to a somewhat normal cycle. Like @Bluestriped Bee and @Marikoono, my cramps & PMS got worse as well, which really really sucked! Luckily after a few months of suffering on the couch with a heating pad, the terrible cramps have diminished.

I was on the pill for about 10 years. I had always been pretty regular (even before going on the pill). My cycles really didn't change at all even after getting off the pill. Although I have noticed that once a year (for the past two years) I've have one long cycle in the spring. I figure my body is just regulating itself.
I do have pretty bad cramps not though, which I didn't have while on the pill.

I was on BC for about a good 10 years (from depo to nuvaring), so it took about 3-4 months. My cycles are long though about 33-34 days. The one thing that did suck was my cramps and PMS got worse. Sometimes I wish I was back on BC.

It's been a while, but I believe when I stopped my hormonal BC -- the ring, in 2007 -- it took about 2 months before it got back to normal.

...how long did it take for your cycles to regulate?

I started taking Loestrin 24 fe in February after spotting every day for about three months. It was supposed to regulate everything, and it did, I guess-- my bleeding stopped and I had 28-29 day cycles. I suppose I didn't do enough research, though, because I had no idea that my cycles would be so wonky after I quit!

I'm at the end (hopefully, please) of my second cycle off of BC. I'm currently on CD 36 and my last cycle lasted 43 days. I don't think I've ovulated since I went off the pill because my temps are all over the place, and I've had stretchy CM (not quite eggwhite?) all through my cycle.

I figured I'll wait at least four cycles (as I've heard it can take three to regulate) and then I'll see my Gyn. But ugh! I'm so impatient... I just want everything to fall into place.

Has it taken any of you a few months for everything to go back to normal after you stopped your BC?
