Hey everyone! Just an update that our LO is doing great on Similac RTF NON-GMO. It makes him less gassy for some reason than just the plain old advanced. And he's pooping perfectly again every other day. Hopefully this keeps up (aside from that he just hit the 6 week fussy stage :meh: ) Thank you all for the help!

Zantac stopped working for us and we moved to Prevacid. We did RTF for a while but switched to powder Gerber - the trick for us was putting the gas drops in the bottle before shaking up - the drops pop all the bubbles.

We used Gerber Soothe (not RTF) to supplement for our (silent) reflux baby. There are a couple of really good articles on Incredible Infant about formula for reflux, gas, colic, etc (e.g., http://incredibleinfant.com/infant-formula/baby-colic-formula/). We started with Soothe and were planning on trying Nutramigen, but he did fine with the Soothe + Prilosec + me reducing dairy/soy in my diet while BFing for about a month while the Prilosec kicked in.

We found the best combination was alimentum with prilosec. I was always advised when switching formulas to allow two weeks before things settled out. Also, we saw a huge difference with the formulas when we stirred in the powder while it was heating up. I also bet if you made a large batch in advance, enough for no more than 24 hours and let it sit the air bubbles would get out.

No advice since we are still on the formula for premature babies but I did notice some differences when we gave our babies RTF versus powder Neosure. On powder version, poops were regular but on the RTF we got thick dark green poop for both babies. Not sure how RTF is different from the powder version.

@paigeface: how long was he on the sensitive before switching back? Hate to say it but the other thing that happened to us (and is probably not the case for you anyway) is that the rtf caused belly aches and the powder didn't. I would want to stick with whatever he's been on longest, to see if it's the meds or the formula. Without knowing that it's hard to say which formula to change to, right?

Do you all think I should stay on the similac advanced for now or transition back to sensitive or another brand? BTW he's been so fussy today. NO naps and he cannot go to sleep no matter how much I soothe.

For our LO we ended up on a soy formula and reflux meds at six months after I just couldn't handle the spit up anymore. At 9 months we stopped reflux meds. About 3 weeks later we moved from soy to similac sensitive and no issues at present (10.5 months). For us the soy and reflux meds seemed to work the most.

@paigeface: I think the idea was needing something more broken down. But we didn't have other issues going on. Hopefully it just clears up but the Ferber was sort of an in between step, the next thing we would have tried was nutragimen (sp?) Thankfully we didn't have to go there.

The magic combination for my reflux-y baby was Enfamil AR formula, Zantac 2x daily and gas drops after every meal. She was the happiest gal as long as we did all these things. We weaned off the gas drops around 7 months and the zantac around 9. She's still on the AR formula at 11 months because I didn't feel like dealing with trying a new formula since we are starting WCM soon.

Good luck!

We switched to similac sensitive because of gas pains and also are dealing with constipation. we add half an ounce of apple juice to her bottle 2-3 times a day and have added a probiotic and that seems to be helping. hopefully once she is eating solids we can stop the juice but she's not quite there yet and it seems to really help.

@LuLu Mom: the only reason I stopped giving it to him (the Zantac) was because I thought it was the culprit behind the constipation. we started it back up this morning and I am going to continue for few weeks to see if it makes any difference!

We used Gerber Goodstart (started with ready made and then switched to powder before going to Allimentum) and I had an extreme acid reflux baby. This was the best for us before switching to the Allimentum (our baby lost weight due to reflux which isn't common.)

You also might try to give your baby time to adjust, a few days isn't enough time to decide if it's working or not. Also, Zantac takes a week to fully show a change, you can't just give it 'when needed" to be truly effective in managing acid reflux. This is something our doctor is very clear about (both our pediatrician and our peds GI)

I find that a little surprising. I used enfamil, but both the regular and sensitive versions. My LO always seemed more constipated on the regular formula. I always though the regular was more likely to cause constipation!

Did you transition slowly between formulas? I think sometimes constipation and tummy trouble can be related to switching too quickly. Maybe transitioning slowly to the sensitive may help alleviate the constipation?

Hi again everyone!
it seems like I live at the pediatricians office or am constantly writing to the board for help! if you read my last post LO was constipated for a few days and had hard stools which we thought might be the baby Zantac he was on but were told at pediatricians that it was most likely because of the switch from similac advanced to similac sensitive. So we switched back to advanced and stopped the Zantac. He finally went and went quite a few times, we also tried just a tiny bit of prune juice and water 1/2oz to 1/2oz. So happy he went but now we are dealing with a very gassy and fussy baby! he did great on the sensitive and no fussiness but he got constipated! like before the similac advanced makes him way more gassy which is why we tried the sensitive to begin with. it's such a catch 22 because I don't want him to be constipated but his fussiness is horrible too! what would you all do? Also, I think his reflux is acting up again so we gave him the Zantac again at 5am this morning since he screamed during his bottle. I really don't want to go back to the pediatricians again, they know me by name so embarrassing!
what formula did you all use and find to be good? I don't really like the powders because he doesn't really like the taste and all the mixing is too much (we do ready to feed even though it's more expensive it keeps us sane and he loves the taste)
any advice would be so appreciated!
