@Corduroy: Thank you!! This helped tremendously! You are also right, it seems like any information is all coming from anti-agave websites. I asked my doc today and he didn't seem concerned. When I mentioned it to my mid wife friend she said she had never heard about it. @YOURSILVERLINING you're so right - if they were concerned, there would be warnings.

@paigeface: Yes. I ate it throughout my pregnancies. I develop food products and some contained agave in this last pregnancy so I ate more than the typical person. My two month old baby is just fine.

I had never heard any buzz about agave and pregnancy. In poking around the internet it looks like the only sources of concern are anti-agave websites. Those say agave has saponins that may cause issues. However, lots of foods contains saponins and they don't have warnings.

Here's a little myth/bust thing I found (below). Although it says heat destroys saponins and technical articles I peeked at said it doesn't (so even less reason to worry). On my phone I didn't find absolute values of saponins for agave so I don't know how the dose compares to oats & lentils. I'm sure you're fine though.

"Saponins. Agave is known to contain large amounts of saponins. Saponins are toxic steroid derivatives, capable of disrupting red blood cells and producing diarrhea and vomiting. There is also a possible link between saponins and miscarriage by stimulating blood flow to the uterus, so if you’re pregnant, you should definitely avoid agave products.

Saponins are found in many common foods, including oats, spinach, grapes, wine, nuts, beans, and seeds. Chances are very good that anyone reading this has eaten some of those. Why are we able to eat those foods? Because saponins are quickly destroyed under heat, while cooking.
Saponins are in fact part of many plants and naturally protect them from insects. They are quickly recognized for their bitter taste and foam producing effects. There are hundred of types of saponins and they are destroyed whenever exposed to heat (as done in the agave syrup process).
The amounts of saponins in Agave Tequilana Weber is comparable to that of chick peas and lentils, two other foods that historically we humans have done fine with. No scientific evidence has been made to “the possible link” to miscarriage, etc of lentils. Nor, as it happens to be, agave."

Remember, anyone can make any claim about anything on the interest. Just because someone, somewhere says (blank food item) causes something, doesn't mean it *actually* does - or that it does in normal doses like putting agave in yogurt. I mean, if a few teaspoons of a substance was really that damaging, it would have to be a pretty darn toxic substance, and likely not safe to ingest, pregnant or not! I think you would know about it, and so would your doctor.

I don't think that I had agave while pregnant but I have never heard not to. My personal opinion is that it is totally fine and nothing to worry about.

I've been putting organic Agave from Target on my greek yogurt and oatmeal since the beginning of pregnancy. It was not on my "do not eat list" they gave me from the OBGYN. Then now I've read things that we are not suppose to have it? Can cause contractions and defects... What the heck... I feel like I literally cannot eat anything anymore. Anyone else have it during their pregnancy?
