I don't think there's ever really a "perfect" time to have a baby, so you just have to do what feels right for you. That being said, I am 28, was 27 when I got pregnant, and struggled for 8 months to conceive. Someone very close to me never had any indication shed have trouble and now in her early 30s, has tried for about a year and suffered two losses. Her RE just told her she has a low reserve and poor quality eggs and recommends she try IVF immediately. As much as it seems like everyone is having babies easily in their late 30s and early 40s, it can and sometimes does become much more difficult for a lot of people with each passing year.

@Eudyptula,
What if you go and talk to your OB/GYN about your fears? They might be able to do your annual exam keeping in mind that you're considering TTC, and let you know if they see any red flags. In addition, I would suggest reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility and maybe doing some preliminary charting. If everything checks out, waiting a year probably won't be a problem. But charting your cycles could reveal whether or not you should start trying sooner.

Similarly, I am 32 and assumed that we'd be waiting a bit, but after going off bcp and not having had a normal cycle in 3 months (PCOS), we're putting conception on a faster track.

Best of luck with this decision!

I thought AMA was now 40, at least that's what my OB told me last year.

I wouldn't wait, but I conceived at 34 on our first official cycle of trying. I was sure we would have issues but didn't and honestly, starting my family was more important than the career goals. Also, just because you get pregnant easily the first time doesn't mean the same will hold true for a subsequent pregnancy (called secondary infertility). Good luck with your decision, I know it's not easy!

You probably have time, so if you really think the job opportunity is coming go for it. If you were in your later 30's I'd be more inclined to say TTC right away.

thanks for the help ladies! I don't really have any reasons to believe we'll have difficulty conceiving, I guess the fear is just from seeing other women in my field wait it out for the "job" and then not be able to get pregnant. and probably from googling things like "pregnant in 30s". YIKES, the interwebs can certainly make things look grim!! I think we will wait it out to see where these opportunities lead us!

It depends... I did have trouble conceiving, so in hindsight, I'd focus on ttc... But if I knew I didnt have an issue, id totally go on the trip.

It really depends on what is most important to you right now. I had the option to take a new job that I really wanted but would have required a lot of travel, some of it to places that aren't pregnancy friendly (required armed escorts, high malaria risk, etc). In my 20's, I'd have taken the job in a heartbeat. But in my 30's, I didn't take it because I was really ready to start a family, and so was DH, who is several years older than me. Two months after turning down the job, I was pregnant. I don't regret my choice at all. Starting a family was my priority when I made the choice - for me and in my profession, I have a lot of time in the future for great jobs and interesting travel but a very limited time to have a lower risk pregnancy (or 2). It was the right decision for me and DH, but definitely not the right choice for everyone.

I would probably wait the year. You have time to have 2 kids. Realistically if you have fertility issues a year either way probably won't make much difference. Sorry if that seems harsh. As background I had baby #1 at 39, now trying for #2 at 40.

I personally would wait the extra year. Contrary to some popular belief ;-P your eggs don't all magically dry up at 30 or even 35. Most of our female friends have waited until their late 30's or into their 40's to have children, and have not run into much difficulty getting pregnant at that time (and did not have fertility difficulty related to age). Unless you have reason to believe you have existing fertility issues, I don't think you would be worse off for waiting a year - especially if the opportunity is as amazing and once in a lifetime as it sounds! Good luck!

It sounds like an amazing opportunity. You are still young so I think it will be fine to wait one more year.

I'm 29. I had my first LO at 28. And I'm still terrified of age and TTC.... even though I'm not 30 yet. But I'm paranoid about everything.

For your situation I don't feel like it would hurt to wait a year. Your still going to be under 35, and have a few years before you do turn 35.

I didn't start until 38. Now at 40, I have 2 beautiful healthy children. I'm a huge believer in living your life and enjoying the now. You could go do this and still have children before you hit advanced maternal age at 35. Have fun!

Being the obsessive, over planner that I am I have been stressing myself out lately thinking about when is the right time to start TTC. If you would have asked me a few months ago, I would have told you that DH and I were planning to start NTNT this coming fall (2012) but of course some things have started to arise that have me second guessing. The biggest issue is that there is the potential for some really awesome, life goal kind of work related travel coming up in the next 12 months. Basically completely paid for working "vacations" (that still accrue salary!!), but are totally 100% NOT pregnancy or baby friendly. And when I say "potential" I mean like there's talk, but nothing has been confirmed. Normally I would just wait it out and TTC after the trips, but here's what's getting me: I am 32, and totally scared that if I keep putting off baby for opportunities that *may* happen in the future I will miss the "window" to actually get pregnant. Not to mention that the longer we wait for baby #1, the possibility for baby #2 could get even harder. UGH! We're not sure if we are "one and done" or "two and through", but I don't love the idea of possibly taking away the option by waiting longer.

did you worry about your age and chances for getting pregnant? am I just being overly paranoid?
