We don't have one at one, but we just stayed at a hotel (Great Wolf Lodge) earlier this summer with a bunk bed and lo1 (4) was SO excited about sleeping on the top bunk! It had a high side railing that kept her from falling out, so as long as the bed has that I'd be good with it. We just bought a twin-sized bed a year ago so I'm not buying her another bed anytime soon, but maybe in the future, since she and lo2 do room-share...

ETA lo1 still wears a diaper at night, I'm not sure how her night wake ups will change if she needs to potty motn...

@justjules: I considered a higher loft and then LO2's crib underneath but I don't know. DD will be almost 4 when we need the crib so she might be fine in a lofted bed. I worry about if she has to go to the bathroom, etc. (most nights she's dry in the morning so might not even be an issue).

@erinbaderin: it's the trofast storage case. We have it butted up in a corner with the access to the bins under the loft area. But you can google it and see a lot of different options. (Not my photo just to show how we have ours)

Following. We are hoping to put DS and DD in the same room.... maybe using the ikea kura lofted bed. It’s not that high- as others have said- so I’m hoping by 3 DS will be ready. He’s not a risk taker but has been in a crib so far so I do worry about him not understanding it doesn’t have a side. I may start him on the bottom while DD is still in a crib then transition him to the top and her to the bottom in a year so he will be closer to 4 and she will be 2.5

At 2 I worried about Dd2 when she would want to play on the top bunk with her older sister (we have an IKEA Kura). But now (she turns 3 in October) I let her sleep and play up there with no concerns. She can get up and down easily on her own and it’s not really all that high.

My son is 2y3m, and he loves climbing into our friends' son's loft bed. He gets in and out safely every time, even without adult supervision... But I don't know how sleep would go. He does lie pretty still at night, so maybe at 2 1/2-3?

He really loves the ones with the slide that comes off of the bed.

DS was just over 3. We got the IKEA loft bed and had it flipped so he was on the bottom. We also got the storage case to make stairs up on one side so he didn't have to use the ladder. We flipped it and he was on top for a month or so but didn't like it so we flipped it back to him on the bottom for now. He is a bit of a risk taker but didn't have an issue with him trying to jump off the top or anything. And it has taller sides around the mattress that made me feel better about it. We also got the tent for the top of it which made me feel even better ;)

DD was two months shy of four when we put bunks in her room. We knew that eventually we'd want to move her little sister in there, so we decided to just go ahead and buy bunks so we wouldn't have to change it later.

She climbs up and gets down from the top bunk fine, but she always sleeps on the bottom bunk, unless she has friends over who will sleep with her in the top bunk.

Ironically, we will probably have to unbunk the beds when we move DD2 in there, because she is a daredevil and wouldn't be content to stay safely on the bottom bunk (we plan to move her in there at a little over the age of two).

I can only say my just turned five year old would not be ready. But I am sure other kids would be by her age!

Eta: I say she wouldn’t be ready because of the bedtime stalling and getting up in the middle of the night and general fooling around. She’s fully capable of getting up and down while awake, I just wouldn’t trust her to stay put.

DS was barely ready at 4.5. DD was fine at 3. Second kid/know your kid. Her climbing, common sense, sleep habits, and coordination were really different than his.

At what age would you or could you put LO safely into an elevated bed? I’m thinking a shorter loft bed since bunks are higher. But whatever!
