I had to look back at photos, but we took DD at a month old. We lived a 5 minute walk so it was always just a couple hours at a time at most. And we went regularly throughout the 2 years we lived there. She was always covered up until 6 months when I could put sunscreen on.

We went to Florida when LO was 6 months old, in July. It was HOT! If possible, get a place with a pool. We went to the beach with him in the mornings and let him play under the shade tent, then he went inside for naptime, we played in the pool during the day, then took walks/beach time again late afternoon before bedtime. He did great and we had a blast.

We took DS to the beach in Spain at 6 months. I didn't think it was any harder than taking him out anywhere else really - but then again it wasn't too hot.

We had a fantastic time with our 3.5-mo-old on a week long beach vacation. It was challenging for sure, but we made it through and enjoyed it. We bought a pop-up UV tent for LO and only took her out into the water for limited periods so she didn't get too much sun exposure. LO's doctor gave the OK for her to have small amounts of sunscreen, so we bought the EWG approved stuff (Blue Lizard brand) and put her in a rash guard and sun hat. It was absolute bliss lying down in the tent to nurse her with the waves lapping by outside.

Hahaha well I don't know what I would do, but my mom took both my brother and I tent-camping and to the camping beach daily at 4 weeks old... then again, she acts like her postpartum experience and raising a newborn was a breeze  I guess that's what 28 years of passing time does to memory, and parenting standards...?

We took DS2 to the beach starting from 2 months. He slept in the shade most of the time in the bucket seat. Was easy as long as it wasn't a long walk from the beach to the car.

5 months. It's definitely doable. Just make sure you have some shade and a pack and play and you'll be fine.

I think anything is possible, if you set your expectations very, very low...as in, you might not be able to stay on the beach very long.

That said, I didn't have the opportunity before my son was 6 months of age, but we did go to the Med coast when he was 8 months old. It was a doozy in terms of the heat, but I am glad we did it.

eta: my son was an early riser so we were literally on the beach for 8 am. We had breakfast right next to the water, it was a wonderful experience.

@Mrs.KMM: yes! Both my girls run HOT! Even when we're in the backyard I keep the baby under shade and she gets so warm. The first hot day she was outside for an hour and felt like she was burning up!

T is 5 mo and we have already been 4+ times. But it is the coast here, not the same as a tropical beach. Just bring a hat, rashguard, big umbrella and beach blanket and I think you will be fine.

We took DD at 6 months - it was great.

I actually wheeled her stroller/infant seat onto the beach - we had a huge shade umbrella and a play mat for the ground.

She slept a lot - I think all the fresh air did her in!

Personally, I would have no desire to try a beach trip at that age. My parents live close to the beach and we purposely did not take DD there when we all went down to my parents' earlier this summer. I just feel like they would end up super hot and uncomfortable the whole time and you wouldn't be able to stay very long.

We plan to do DD's first beach trip next summer when she is just over a year old.

One of my coworkers just took her LO to the beach at 3.5 months and had a blast! I'm also planning to take a beach trip during my maternity leave - figure I'll get some sort of cabana/sun shade.

I think at that age, I would only try it if it makes sense to go for a short trip- like a couples of hours max, and on a not too hot day. Definitely bring shade like a pop up tent type thing, and be prepared to have to leave a lot earlier than you had planned if things fall apart. But it is nice that at that age, if they fell asleep on a towel in the shade, you know they won't move!

That said we never attempted until C was almost a year, and it was stressful (because she was in a stage of putting everything in her mouth, like handfuls of sand, then crying about it) and short, because we went between her two naps. But it was fun for the experience. She was born late July so we went the summer after she was born.

I would personally confirm with my ped. Before 6m you're not supposed to put sunscreen on the baby much less stay in the sun for long periods of time. If you had to go I would bring some kind of UV sunshade and don't stay too long. At that point it's not even worth it! I'm very conservative with regard to sun safety though. And if you catch a windy day...

I took LO to our local reservoir beach at 4 weeks to watch LO1 swim with DH. He stayed in the carrier and I sat in the shade. I usually sit on a blanket there but i brought a camp chair to make nursing more comfortabke. I think with some for of shade you should be fine.

I saw a mom holding a newborn out of the water while helping her toddler swim. That looked super awkward/hard.
