You can buy these machines the emit a high pitched noise only dogs can hear that annoys them. Maybe buy one of those and place it buy the fence? They are motion activated.

I wouldn't make any passive aggressive comments about being "concerned for the dog". I would be straight forward with your needs, but in a kind way. Don't make any statements about what he is "doing wrong", focus more on what you think will make things better. I would start out by telling him that the barking and aggressiveness is still a very big problem and you want him to keep the dog inside when he isn't home. If he refuses, I would start calling animal control and calling in complaints. Depending on how proactive they are, it might entice him to finally listen. But I find most people like that get super defensive and intentionally try to make things worse, especially owners of large dogs for some reason - so I would use that as a last resort.

Leaving your dog in your yard unattended is an atrocious habit. It's stressful for the dog and obnoxious/terrifying for neighbors. They should train their dog to stay inside when they're away from the house. Crate training is a great option and can actually help high-strung dogs relax. We assume dogs will be happier with space to run around, but often the opposite is true.

If they insist on leaving the dog outside, honestly as terrifying as it is, I think the best solution would be for you to do an actual meeting with the dog (ideally with a muzzle on) with his owners present when he's calm. Our dog is very territorial and extremely aggressive to people/neighbors who come near the front door, but as soon as they come inside and start petting him, he's their best friend for life. And we do have a muzzle for him for the times when we need to control those interactions - as responsible dog owners should.

@Mamasig: I would definitely not give a dog anything without talking to the owner first! I would want him to be there too if we were to go that route...In addition to common courtesy, I don't want to be anywhere near this dog unless her owner is there too... I also thought that by now the dog really should be used to us. It makes me especially nervous that she isn't. Our neighbors on all 3 sides of our fence have dogs. They come up to the fence, sniff around for a bit, and then go about their business.

@kiddosc: What a nightmare!! :(

@Madison43: Ugh. We might have to seriously consider a privacy fence :(

If we were to contact the landlord (he is a realtor and owns a rental company, so DH has known him for years. He owns 5+ houses all within a couple blocks of ours) should we attempt to talk to the dog owner beforehand? I feel like such a jerk going behind their backs, since they seem to be nice people. But being forced to listen to that dog snarl at us all afternoon every day is just not okay....and neither is having to hide in my house and not use my backyard.

I would definitely contact the homeowner if you can, especially since you've already tried talking to the tenants. I'm a dog person, but a lot of my ideas changed when I had my kids. Dogs are very strong and a chain link fence won't get in the way of an aggressive dog. When it comes to kids, you can never be too safe. I would think by this point the dog would have gotten used to your scent and recognized you weren't trespassing. I also would not give the dogs treats. As a pet owner, that is a big no no. Just like I don't want strangers giving my kids treats, I don't want them to give them to my dog.

@Mrs. Lion: yeah I don't want to be an alarmist but like @kiddosc: when I was in high school, I watched a pit bull leap from a moving car (open window), run across our schools parking lot, and jump onto a parked pickup truck to attack the terrified students who were trying to get away from it by standing on top of the pick up truck's cab. They are just crazy crazy strong dogs. I have nothing against the breed and think they can be very sweet, BUT owners need to recognize their power and act appropriately. If they are not going to be responsible pet owners, I'd put a solid, much higher fence on my property and call the homeowner.

@Mrs. Lion: Are you friendly with the homeowner? Since these people do not seem to be courteous neighbors, I would be contacting the landlord. It is not unreasonable for them to be asked to not leave the dog out so often.

I wasn't hurt badly, but my pants were ripped and I had two small punctures and some scrapes. My DH went over there and tried to talk to the guy, who wouldn't answer his door. (though I wouldn't have either) He did talk to the neighbor, who said the dog gets out often. We called animal control and their policy is to quarantine the dog for 10 days after a bite incident. I'm a dog lover and didn't want the dog put down for the incident, but wanted to know he was healthy and that he would be better contained in the future. The owner wouldn't surrender his dog to animal control for the quarantine and they ended up taking him to court. We were called as witnesses. When we showed up, the guy plead guilty, I don't remember the exact charges, and had to pay a lot of fines. He also apologized to me, it was kind of awkward. He ended up moving out of the neighborhood right after that... unrelated to the incident.

Yeah, I would approach it in a manner that shows concern for their dog so it doesn't seem like you're attacking their dog's behavior. Ugh, such a tough situation you have there. I hope the dog gets used to seeing kids and just chill out after a while. At least they are renters and will move at some point, hopefully? I have a small dog so my kids are generally okay with other dogs; but I am not comfortable with my kids playing with big dogs for now, especially if I don't know who they are or if they are clearly aggressive. Too bad you can't suggest a wireless fence so he doesn't even get near his fence; but I guess that doesn't solve the nuisance of the barking. :\

@T.H.O.U.: that's a good idea about the treats!

@kiddosc: @wonderstruck: the dog is probably out there about 75% of the time we are outside. Maybe now that we are out there more they will keep her inside more? The owners are only out there occasionally, usually when she's barks g at us and they come to make an apperance.

@kiddosc: that is terrifying :( what happened with the dog after that??

If the dog isn't outside constantly, not jumping over the fence, and there is a gap between the two fences, I don't think you have any real reason to contact the homeowner. It sounds unpleasant, but some dogs just see people near their property as intruders and act that way. My dog growing up was the sweetest thing with visitors in our house or yard, but if someone walked by the house or fence she lost her mind. Granted, we didn't have her outside alone very often, just when she needed to go to the bathroom and she'd be back inside within 5-10 minutes, and certainly not when we weren't home...how often/long is the dog out there alone?

Is the dog outside all the time? I would be beyond annoyed and contact the home owner at this point. If I couldn't enjoy my backyard because of an inconsiderate neighbor I would be doing whatever I could to remedy it. They need to take the dog inside and only let it out supervised.

As an aside, I was bitten by a pitbull as I took my 4 month old for a walk in our neighborhood. The dog had jumped a standard height chain link fence that the owner swore he couldn't get over.

@Mrs. Lion: what about asking if you could toss the dog some dog biscuits while your outside? Just thinking if he learns that you toss him a biscuit when he's quiet he will associate you with something good?

I would maybe contact the homeowner if you know them. The dog barking is a noise nuisance even if it's fenced and not aggressive.

@LuLu Mom: @T.H.O.U.: @PurplePumps: Unfortunately I have already had many conversations with him throughout the fall and winter....the dog is just as aggressive when he is out there with her, but he can calm her down for a minute or so at a time. He has told me "she is just freaked out because he (LO) is so little and she isn't used to little people", but this dog is just as aggressive when we go outside without LO. :( I have tried asking if there is anything I can do to help her get used to him, but he just says "no, she just has to learn". But she doesn't seem to be learning :(

@Madison43: Fortunately there are two separate fences with about a 3 foot gap between them...so LO can't get his arms through the fence far enough to reach her, and if she was to clear the fence she would fall between the fences. The day she clears that fence is the day I call animal control I think... :(

@regberadaisy: I totally hate that too. I have lots of friends with pit bulls and they can be so sweet. I am definitely not biased against the breed. This one in particular just hates us :( I'll check into the slats. That may be more cost effective than putting up a full privacy fence.

Pepper spray is a great idea. I probably should have some for when we go on walks anyway...sometimes we encounter unleashed dogs and I have always thought I would feel better if I had a way to defend us.

Also...this family is renting this home. At what point is it reasonable to contact the homeowner? Is that overstepping? Is contacting animal control a better option? Are both unreasonable? I feel like if the dog is contained within a fence there is probably nothing either can do....

I would definitely talk to the neighbors and let them know that their dog barks and is very aggressive toward you and your LO. I would ask if he has ever in the past gotten out and if it's at all possible to restrain him on leash in addition to the fence. If he's people aggressive, there's just no knowing what could happen. My dog was attacked and bit by a dog (happen to a pit mix also). He went straight for the jugular and 3 guys, including the pits owner couldn't get him off for a whilie. They are just not to be messed with, that jaw is meant to lock and stay that way. After what happen with our dog (he is ok, but had a big hole in his neck), I honestly don't even think I would let my LO out there if the dog was there. Or at least get a can of pepper spray or something to keep the dog away if it made it over. It was so traumatic with my dog, I don't even want to imagine the damage the dog could easily have done to a human, especially a baby.

Ugh owners like that give pit bulls the bad rep they don't deserve. :bummed:
They sell these slots you can put in between the chain links. Not sure if that will help on the dog's end because s/he will still know you're there. But at least on your side for your LO if she can't see the dog she might get over the fascination.

Yikes. I'd be incredibly nervous about that fence - you'd be surprised what a strong dog can get over if it wants to. I'm going to say that if they know their dog is snarling at small kids and not taking any action already, it's probably not going to matter what you say. Can you put a high privacy fence around your property? That should alleviate the safety issue and hopefully, if the dog can't see you, they'll be less barking.

Our next door neighbors have a pit bull who is extremely aggressive toward us when we are outside. Both of our yards are fenced (chain link, so you can easily see through). Our neighbors make a half hearted attempt to calm her down when they are outside with her, but they aren't always there. If the dog is outside while we are she continuously snarls and barks and attempts to jump the fence. I'm pretty sure she can't get over the fence...but they have lived there since last summer and it is not getting any better. Poor LO wants to be the dogs best friend and doesn't understand that she is not friendly.

Does anyone have experience or suggestions for dealing with this? We are friendly with the neighbors but don't really know them. We will be outside a lot now that the weather is nice and this dog just does not let up...
