My (ex) step-mom had this. It was almost exactly like you describe. She couldn't go out in public and basically stayed in her house for like 8 years. It only got better for her after they divorced several years ago. She found out her trigger was from something bad that happened in their marriage about half way through.

She said therapy really helped her manage it though. Hopefully you can find something that will work for you.

@badwolf: Oh yikes! If I had been stuck in an elevator ever I wouldn't be typing here today. I would have died for sure.

@anonysquire: that does make it harder, when you can't figure out where something came from! abusive ex could have something to do with it. did you ever get stuck in an elevator or anything like that? wherever it came from, I hope you get help and feel better soon!

@badwolf: I still have never been able to pinpoint a root. I am not trying to brag here but I had a perfect childhood, no trauma ever growing up and still have a fairly perfect relationship with my family. Nothing happened near the time my anxiety or agoraphobia started. The only thing is dating my abusive ex maybe? But even that wasn't horrible. And it was a whole year before the anxiety even started. Thank you for the information, I don't mean to talk your ear off lol!

@anonysquire: I'm sorry your previous treatment wasn't helpful. most therapists will offer a sliding fee scale if you have to pay out of pocket. the thing about phobias of any kind is that they generally stem from some kind of earlier trauma - either a big incident that scared the crap out of you, or even smaller incidents over time that built up. if you've never been able to get at the root of the anxiety, it'll keep coming back. has there been anything about your past therapy or treatment that was helpful? you may also want to try some holistic options, like yoga or meditation to train your mind to quiet down sometimes. mindfulness is hard work but can be really helpful to slow down the anxiety train.

@badwolf: I think I have literally the worst insurance in Utah. NO one takes it. Seriously no one. It is so hard to find providers. I just need to man up and try and get myself better no matter the cost. I have to admit though I do not have a lot of hope. 3 years of therapists, psychiatrists and many many meds and I do not feel an ounce better. Thank you though!!!

I haven't had agoraphobia, but I'm a psychotherapist and I can promise you things can get better! ask your doctor and/or your insurance company for a referral to a therapist who specializes in treating anxiety disorders. you might find CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) helpful at least in the beginning to get a handle on your anxiety and de-escalating yourself. anti-anxiety medication can also be helpful, and doesn't have to be the super strong stuff like Xanax. the therapy will be so worth your time though - obviously I'm biased, but I've seen clients make huge progress in a relatively short time with anxiety. best of luck!

Has anyone here been diagnosed with Agoraphobia? Holy cow! I just got diagnosed today. Still could be wrong but if it is right it makes so much sense! I almost feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I have been reading about it this afternoon and one thing that struck a chord with me is that it is the fear or open spaces or crowds but also changing situations, public transportation and fear of going somewhere you have had anxiety before.

Anyways, just thought I would ask if anyone else out there is familiar with this? I freaking just want to feel normal again and be able to live my life again.
