We flew with a car seat and a stroller. We were told that you're allowed to swap the stroller for a pack and play if you want to. So, if you're not taking a stroller that might be an option?

@Foodnerd81: sorry! no bag fee since we had 3 ticketed passengers and one free checked bag per passenger so it counted as one of our free checked bags. And we have an old version of the Phil and Teds clip on high chair.

@blackbird: cool. Yeah, I put extra diapers in there and could even fit our little collapsible travel high chair. The kind that locks onto a table. I actually forgot to pick it up from baggage claim when we got to our home airport! They delivered it to our house. Haha.

@Foodnerd81: I think you have to practice, you know? You could do a towel or a piece of pool noodle, that you can pack with the seat.

eta: and I agree, if it comes down to it and you have a good FF install, you're better than a poor RF install.

@BabyPenguinXO: Very good point. And it will be a rental so we won't know what type until we get there.

But, she will be more than 18 months, and we won't be driving that much, so if she has to FF for a few short trips I won't lose too much sleep over it, too.

@BabyPenguinXO: The problem I had with the scenera is there is a piece of plastic on the front of the seat, it's fixed and can't be moved (at least in my 5 year old model it is). It causes the seat to pitch forward, regardless of the seat in the car, although, I do agree, that is part of the equation as well.

@looch: That's what I am thinking-- we have a giant suitcase it will fit in, so I think i'll put it in and weight it on our bathroom scale and see how many pounds i have left for all my stuff, and C's.... which makes me think I'll go over the weight limit.

@Mamaof2: @lamariniere: Yeah our friends will accept teh package for us ahead of time, so I'd have it shipped to them a few days before.

@looch: I would be planning to install RF. I think I actually read another post where you said it was hard to do RF... if you had a towel with you, would it still be really difficult do you think? Our infant seat base was a nightmare to install in our old car (no LATCH) so I feel like I can tackle anything but really.... I'm no expert.

the angle for the carseat is dependent on the car. Some cars have more slanted seats which causes that issue.. So the towel/noodle thing may not be an issue but any seat that's slanted in a car is going to be trouble to install a car seat regardless of brand.

@looch: what airline did you fly that was kid friendly!? Was it a U.S one?

You can check it but its not free like car seats and strollers!

So for the check fee I would just order one and ship it to your friends house -

We use a Scenera for travel and have been very happy with it!

I have packed my PNP in my giant suitcase, I have a luggage scale so I was able to make sure I didn't go over. I've also checked it separately, but that was a very child friendly airline, and there was no additional cost for it.

I also have a Cosco Scenera, it's a good seat IF you are not installing it rear facing...it's difficult to get a good install without a pool noodle or a towel. I've used it on planes, in cars in Europe, at WDW, belt installed, LATCH installed, you name it.

In my previous post, you all convinced me we should go on vacation after all :)

So now, new questions. Has anyone flown with a regular Graco Pack and Play? Any idea if you put it in a big suitcase if that would work or you are just definitely going to go over the weight limit? I may just buy a new one at Walmart for $40 and leave it with friends who live at our destination but I'd rather use what we have if possible. Renting one is like $35 for a week so I'd rather buy a new one for $5 more and then the friends can use it for their grandkids.

And I know it's been asked before, but thinking of getting a Cosco Scenera car seat just for travel. Reviews are mixed, it seems, but overall positive. Looking for lightweight, fairly easy to install (not doesn't have to be the super easiest since we won't be in and out of cars that much), and cheap. C is a shortie so I'm pretty sure we will be fine with the RF height limit for a while.
