I've done the collect bags/recheck thing and what I found was that you really need is as much time as possible between the flights, especially if they're not in the same terminal.

Depending on where you're going, I'd ship as much as possible ahead and possibly check into a porter. Our home airport has them, they'd meet you at baggage claim, collect the bags onto a trolley and move them for you.

Unaccompanied minors is something the airlines do, that's probably what your parents did when you were a kid. They don't allow you to do that with babies though.
There is such a thing as "air nannies". They fly with you and help you with the baby and anything else you need. They aren't especially cheap though.

I know when I was younger and I flew alone my parents paid for an escort that helped me board the flight and move between connecting flights.

I may need to take some internationl trips with LO (after she/he is born in November, probably one around 3 months and one around 7 months age) and my husband may not be able to join us. I'm wondering if anyone has heard of any services that can help you? I think I'd be fine once I check in my luggage (which hubby could help with) and I'd have someone at my final destination who could help as well, but what I'm most concerned about is customs. At one airport in the middle I'd need to go collect all my luggage, go thru customs, and re-check in. Anyone ever heard of a service like that?

I was wondering if I could just have them "escort" the baby, even though I'd be there, just so I could get some help with luggage and moving around.

(Or maybe I should just ship all my stuff in advance and carry very little so I could manage on my own...)
