@BoogieBea: Thanks for sharing your experience! I actually just adjusted all of our legs to do the 3-1 seating since after thinking through it, it seemed like a good set up for our family. We'll see how we do..

Thanks everyone for your input!

We just flew and we did 3 and 1. I sat alone first and then we switched. It's nice that one person can have that break. The kids sat next to each other and while there were some bickering, I think they preferred it that way for the most part. There was more room for both of them to move around and they did keep each other busy for most of the flight.

I like @lawbee11: 's set up. I think it would be nice to have a row all to yourselves so you could spread out all your stuff and not worry about "infringing" on anyone's space.

@lawbee11: That's what I'd do too. Plus with the separate aisle seat, you and DH can trade places halfway through the flight so you each get a little break.

@lawbee11: This is what I think, especially for a shorter flight. Otherwise, for a longer flight, I would divide-- but not front/back. Take the middle and aisle seats across from each other (ex: Row 17, seats B, C, D, E).

@T-Mom: just luck! also, because she was only 3 months. I know older kids are much, much harder. That's why I'm geussing it takes a parent NOT watching their own movie with headphones on to make it through a flight, lol.

I should say, my mom and their other kid a few rows back were not annoying anyone. Just the dad. if you guys are all close together, it should be fine.

Option 2. It always worked out well for us as a family (we traveled a lot). Dad sat in the seat alone, mom got to sit between us (lucky her...)

@Anagram: That sounds horrible! And so awesome that your LO was a perfect angel! :-) My DH is pretty good at entertainment, but he definitely loves his in flight entertainment too ;-) . I'm thinking he can do a good job with my 5 yr old and they can both zone out on media together.

@T-Mom: Divide and conquer only if both parents are equally good at entertaining LOs. I was recently on a trip with my then 3 month old. I was sweating bullets, worried my baby was going to be the screaming baby.

But I needn't have worried--my LO hardly made a peep and just ate and slept....but a family of 4 (3 year old and dad in front of me and mom and 5-7 year old a few rows behind) were annoying everyone on the plane.

The dad put headphones on and watched a movie on his computer and ignored the 3 year old, who screamed incessantly over a game he was playing on an Ipad..the entire, two hour flight. The 3 year old was also kicking the seat in front of him, and that guy turned around and started a whole altercation with the dad. Loud cursewords were involved.

The man sitting next to the Dad asked the flight attendants if there was another seat he could move to (there wasn't). =(

It was...awkward.

I would do one child by window one adult in middle one child in aisle and other adult in aisle. I am always paranoid about bothering other passengers and this seems like the best setup for that. Plus with one of you in the middle it will cut down on the bickering.

@mrsjyw: the rules apply for lap children and car seat placement (only one extra air mask per row and car seat can't obstruct another passenger from exiting the row).

I don't think it's ideal for you to split up into two rows with another passenger in the mix, but if your kids are going to bicker, then it's better they're separated.

We are taking a trip early next year and it will be the first time buying plane tickets for a family of four (ouch).

I was having trouble figuring out best seating for our family. The seat configuration on the plane is rows of three. Do I sit with the two kids while my DH sits across the aisle? Or do we divide and conquer? Dividing and conquering sounds ideal, but what if the kids want to move around, and that will be a hassle with other passengers in the row. If we have a whole row for three of us, at least I can own that row.. but they also like to fight and bicker.

What would you do? It's only a 3 hour flight.
