Thanks for the feedback, ladies. I guess I figured that the extra legroom seats are a bonus and people are willing to shell out $30 for 4 more inches, but I didn't think of it your way, @Foodnerd81: -- that maybe after seeing only the middle seat left, someone will decide against it!

I would say window/aisle, you can switch with the middle seat person aisle the person in the window might want to get off the plane when everyone else is trying to get off and you will have to do the weird step out let them off and wait your turn.

DH and I do the same things as @Foodnerd81... Very rarely does the middle seat stay open any more though. Our flights are usually longer than what you'll be flying so I don't know if that plays a role in it or what?

I always try the aisle/window combo when flying with DH-- and that's without a baby. You could luck out-- though it happens less and less these days, with most flights flying at capacity. But worst case scenario is someone is assigned to the middle seat and you say, oh we are flying together with the baby, would you mind taking the window (or aisle, whichever you don't prefer)? Whoever had the middle seat will be glad to not be in the middle, even more so when they realize you have the baby with you. I'd say it works and we get the empty seat between us maybe 1 out of 4 times lately.

Also-- I think, though have never checked, that people would be even less inclined to pay extra for the extra legroom seats with a middle seat, so you might have better chances. Just make sure you aren't in an exit row.

Sorry for the novel.

I say try the window/aisle strategy and hope you luck out. And if there is someone there, you can always ask them to switch. I'm sure whoever is there will happily switch out of the middle seat!

So LO, the hubs, and I will be flying to Vegas in about a month and she'll be 9 months old. We're going out because hubs does IT work and will be helping with a friend's business. At the moment, C's not crawling, so I don't know how squirmy she'll be when the time comes.

Luckily for us, the flight is only about an hour (we live in Orange County, and we're flying out of Long Beach on JetBlue), so our first airplane trip with baby won't be a long one. I've read on different sites (including this one!) to have mom & dad select the window & aisle seats in a row of three, leaving the middle (and least desirable) seat left, hoping that no one selects it. Then, if someone does sit there, I could always switch and offer him/her the window seat.

Would this be needed on such a short flight? Our friend, who bought the tickets, also upgraded us to the "extra space" seats, which give us a little more legroom. Should I just choose seats together or should I try the window/aisle strategy?
