We have Vivint and are very happy with it. Basic monitoring is $50, buy we pay an extra $10 for added features including a thermostat that's tied to our system (so no matter the day or schedule when we arm the system to be away from the house it adjusts temp). I really love their customer service. It has been worth every penny.

@Jess1483: we JUST got a Simplisafe system but haven't installed all the pieces yet so I don't have much experience actually using it. But I like that it can be used as a local alarm even if you don't want to pay for monitoring (i.e. sirens will go off but the company doesn't contact the police). Where I live, the police sometimes don't get to the scene of the break-in for hours after they get the call, depending on what else they're busy with, so monitoring unfortunately doesn't add *that* much peace of mind...but not many burglars are going to stick around long if a super loud siren is wailing. I don't know if the sale is still on, but they were offering $100 off a kit with everything I wanted, which I thought was a really good deal.

@SwanSong: Eek! What did you do to set it off?

I always thought they were silly and a waste too until our house was broken into last December. We now use Frontpoint to monitor our house.

@SwanSong: That's great to hear! We're moving (in 3 days...I should be packing) and decided we definitely wanted an alarm on the new house. I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the choices, but I like the idea of no contract.

@Jess1483: We have Simplisafe and it's been great. We had a false alarm a few weeks ago and by the time we got back to our house (less than 5 minutes) three cops were already checking things out. I should point out the false alarm was user error on behalf of my husband and myself.

Has anyone used Simplisafe? It looks good and has good reviews, but...

You have to buy the equipment (I've seen other places where it's free), but then monitoring is only $15-25/month, depending on features, plus no contracts.

We have a local company. I set it every night and every time we leave, and feel so much more secure, especially when DH travels for work.

The people I know who use adt are very happy with it. We live in a gated community so haven't felt the need for one, but I make my parents get us stickers and signs for us from their company!

Does anyone have an alarm system on their home? What company do you use? And what are the costs like?

We've had several break-ins on our dead end street, and we've been spared I think mostly because we have several enthusiastic and vocal sounding guard dogs (that if anyone made it in would be utterly useless, but even the UPS lady knows to sneak packages on the porch! However, we do live in a sort of dodgy neighborhood and I feel like even just a basic alarm system would be useful, even if just to make us lower on the list for a break-in. DH however thinks it's useless and a waste of money. So I'm wondering what you bees think!

ETA: One of the break-ins was our immediate next door neighbors in the middle of the day while I was home alone with LO. There was also a shooting less than a block away, also during the day while I was home alone with LO (I SAH 2 days/wk). Gah.
