My vote is for Alexandra. I think it gives you the option of “alexa” as a shortened version but you aren’t stuck with it so it is more versatile. My niece has this name but has always been called Allie. I like the Alex- based nicknames better.

I think my second choice is Alexis. I also know an Alexia (grown up) and I like the name and never thought of the frozen french fries or anything else until this thread!

The thing that is hard with Amazon Alexa is that you don’t know how it will age. It may be out of date in a couple years or more popular than it is now. Alexandra gives you the most options.

Our daughter is Alex.

We needed short and simple names for our kids because half their relatives don't speak English as a native language. Plus I felt Alexandra was just too formal or girly for us.

It turns out Alex is pretty flexible as well. She could choose Lexi or Allie for nicknames.

I've surprised myself by calling her a double name a lot of the time--her middle name is also short, but more feminine. It's a super cute double name.

I also really like that she could remain gender neutral on a resume, if that helps. My other daughter has a neutral middle name she could use for the same reason.

I love just Alex but if you feel you need a longer name I would pick Alexandra.

@MrsLonghorn: this happens a lot to us because one of my best friends recently married a girl named Alexa. We always have to say x's wife if we talk about her in our house. Also when our three year old DD met her she said "hi Alexa, please play pandora." :silly:

Personally, I love just plain Alex.

If you have an Echo I would definitely change the command word. I was talking about an Alexa yesterday, and it kept activating and interrupting our conversation....we finally had to switch our conversation to "that girl"

I prefer a longer more feminine name and then using Alex as a nn to give your daughter options later in life. I voted for Alexandra :)

I agree it's a bad time to name a kid Alexa which is unfortunate but could be a possible nickname if the association dies down on the future. I really like Lexi as a nick name.

@peachykeen: thanks, it's so good to hear your perspective! i do sometimes think, if it's the one i truly prefer maybe i should just not worry about amazon, so i'm really glad to hear that you haven't found it to be an issue...i actually made my husband get the google home instead of the echo over christmas because i didn't want my 2 yo son to create that association with the name--so now he calls his grandparents' echo "gookle"

I'm partial to Alexa since that's my daughter's name  She's 3.5 and we've honestly never had anyone reference Amazon Alexa. A few people didn't understand that her name wasn't 'Alexis' when she was a baby, but if anything the Amazon thing has helped people recognize it as a valid name.

I though it was going to be a problem when it first came out (we'd already picked the name) but it has been a total non-issue so far. We'll see if that continues through middle school.

And our Alexa is super entertained that there's another Alexa. It's a little funny hearing peoples' Echos activating when we're talking to/about her at other peoples' houses (though if we had one we would definitely rename it)

I know a girl named Alexandria and everyone calls her Alex.

Too bad about the name, Alexa. But it’s true, my 5 year old and I were at a store recently and overheard a mom calling her daughter Alexa. Immediately my daughter goes, “Alexa? Like Alexa turn off the light?” I’m pretty sure my 2 year old even knows that name bc we use it for a lot of stuff.

I'd go with Alexandra or Alexis. Agree that Alexa is wrecked. It's not naming your kid Adolf, but for now it's no good. I think Alex is a great nn but if that's her full legal name on resumes and college applications and everything else, I think she's destined for a lifetime of confusion/explaining.
