@mrs. wagon: I'm glad that you were able to get something out of my story! I hope that this doesn't happen to you and it probably shouldn't so don't stress too much. However, that said, the doctors have no idea why this happened and there is probably no reason for it...Enjoy your pregnancy!!

Thanks all of you again for your support!! All is good and things continue to remain stable. I got my 2nd steroid shot this morning and the docs are still hopeful that as long as I don't get an infection or go into active labor that I will be able to get to 34/35 weeks! They won't let me go beyond 35 weeks so at the latest we will have a baby girl arriving on June 30! If you're interested in following my story more, check out my profile, where I've updated it with my "private" blog.

@alittlep: I had PROM and my water broken at 36 weeks in the middle of the night (2am like you!). I had no signs of anything like that happening except for my water just breaking out of nowhere. Mine was a HUGE gush and I just knew it had to be my water so I rushed to the hospital. I started contracting pretty much right away so they had to deliver my son that same day. He had a bit of jaundice and he needed some temperature regulation. Now, he's a rambunctious and healthy 2 year old! :) Glad to hear that there aren't any infections and that you stopped contracting! Those are all good signs! Every day that the baby bakes is good! :) I'm keeping you in my thoughts all day.

@ALittleP: oh my goodness. I am just a week ahead of you (33 weeks yesterday) so THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting all of this information. I have been freaked out at the idea of going as early as now (I have a lot of discharge and I'm always afraid it's amniotic fluid!) so now I know what to expect if that were to happen. The hospital I'm delivering at has the best NICU in my city, maybe one of the best in the country, so I'm so glad we're delivering there.

Glad to hear you are doing well, hoping and praying your baby girl stays in there and bakes for a little longer!!! Keep us posted!!!

Thanks for all the well wishes and thanks @Sandy for updating everyone! @mediagirl: that story is heartwarming and it helps to know there are success stories out there!!

We are doing well and the nurse took all of the monitors off of me. They were going to monitor me around the clock but because I hadn't had a contraction for more than two hours they removed the monitors. I'll be put on them three times a day.

But back to the beginning (sorry this will be long, I need to write about it): I woke up at 2:45am to a big release of fluid. I thought I'd had an accident while sleeping and went to the toilet. When I came back to bed, I realized that I was still leaking. So, I called the On Call doctor and explained what was happening. She told me to put a pad on and see if it soaked through in an hour and if so to meet her at the hospital. I put a pad on and in about 15 minutes I was soaked through my PJs. So, I woke up DH and we headed to the hospital.

As soon as we got to the hospital, I had to use the toilet again and at that point, I had blood in my urine. When I told the nurse, she said, "Yup, your water has broken and we'll need to transfer you to the hospital with our level 3 NICU." I burst into tears immediately.

They had me change into a gown and I climbed into the bed where they took some blood and put an IV into me. The doctor on call did an internal exam with a speculum, which is super uncomfortable while pregnant and also did another test using litmus paper to confirm the fluid was amniotic. Positive for amniotic fluid and 1 cm dilated.

The doctor ordered an ambulance to transfer me to the high risk hospital and started IV meds with antibiotics (that I will remain on for 5-7 days - I think) and a shot of steroids to help my baby's lungs mature. I also received four IV bags of magnesium sulfate, which helps to stop contractions and helps with the baby's brain development. The magnesium sulfate was pushed into my IV so fast (intentionally) that I felt like I was a happy drunk. It was funny and helped to diffuse the scary situation.

Once all of those meds had been pushed into my system, the ambulance drivers got me ready for transport. The team was super nice and MH followed us in our car.

I live in a city with an amazing healthcare system. The hospital where we are has a level 3 NICU so when our baby is born, she will get fantastic care. The team that we've worked with is amazing already.

We arrived and I was whisked into a room and put straight to bed. They ran some additional tests and finished the other medications that they want me on. They also hooked me up to a monitor for contractions and baby's heart beat. She sounded fantastic and I was contracting every 2-5 minutes (without realizing it). They said that I could have been like this for days...

A comprehensive ultrasound was ordered (similar to the 20 week u/s) and they measured how much amniotic fluid remained. There were two pockets of fluid and an amnio was ordered, which freaked me out. It was a necessary procedure to rule out infection.

We were told if there is an infection they would induce me right away and we would have a baby in our arms sooner rather than later. If not, they would do another steroid injection 24 hours after the first and reassess the situation.

Two long hours later the test results came back and it was confirmed that there was no infection; however, one test was a 12 and if the test result was a 10 they would have induced. They said that they would monitor me very carefully for any signs of infection.

So, the latest is that I receive the second steroid shot tomorrow at 5:30am and unless I go into active labor or there is any indication of infection, I will stay here in the hospital for as long as it takes. The current long term goal is for me to keep the baby inside until around 34/35 weeks. I'm currently 31w5ds. Fingers crossed!

Has anyone had any experience with premature rupture of membranes aka PROM? What is your story?

@alittlep - no matter what happens, I wanted to let you know that my SIL had her baby boy at 33 weeks. He came out perfect. He had to spend 2 weeks in the NICU to let his lungs grow up a bit but then he was fine to go home. He's a big, healthy 7 month old now. Still hoping you can keep the baby in there a little longer, though!!
