I'm a neat freak, so I usually try to pick up a room, area, etc immediately as the days go on so there's never much deep cleaning needed. Every night after DD goes to bed I quickly clean up the kitchen (DH makes a huge mess cooking) and will endlist DH to help vaccum/mop if needed.

If I know our weekends are full, I'll also spread our weekly cleaning chores throughout week nights.

I literally just do it really fast and ask DH to help with what he can so that we can at least have another hour or so to relax. It really all depends on how early DD goes to bed on any particular day too...

It's hard!! And I'm super OCD so I have a really high standard of what "clean" is!

i would prioritize a few "must do" tasks that are manageable for the week, and try to let go of other things. it's super hard to do that sometimes, but we can drive ourselves crazy trying to keep everything spic and span.

Keep some cleaning supplies in each room, this way if you find yourself needing to wipe something, you can do it without leaving the room. Also, small garbage cans in each room, so you can throw away things and not have to move them around. Once a week, gather up all the trash.

Keep surfaces as bare as possible, I find it's the nicknacks that are the problem with the dust and what not.

Keep a laundry basket on each level of your house, put things in it that need to go to the other level so they're not all over the place.

Get a laundry sorting hamper, you know the ones with the different bins? Mark what goes in each so anyone can easily do the laundry without having to sort. We keep one in the master, all the clothes go in there.

I could have written this post, except my version would read "I feel like I'm always trying to clean but having to stop". Saturday morning was the worst. I was cleaning the bathroom until E wet herself. Then I tried again but she was suddenly hungry. After snack, I tried to clean the living room but she wanted to help, which quickly turned into a tantrum when I wouldn't let her spray excessive amounts of polish everywhere. I tried hoovering but we had to take turns and when I tried to enforce that my turn was long enough to actually do some hoovering, she started turning the hoover off over and over, insisting it was her turn. So I left her, having an extended turn, with the hoover and went to empty the dishwasher and, when I got back, she had emptied her toy boxes all over the room. Aaaaagh!

@hummusgirl: I'm actually in the process of this :) we moved LO to a different room and there's less storage, so I'm trying to wade through his toys and keep his favorites, stash done for rotation, set aside a few things for baby, and trash some stuff, as well as a donate pile. It's slow going because LO has strong, irrational at times, views on things. Toys he hasn't touched in months or pieces of toys are suddenly his favorite lol

We got rid of 90% of our toys (well, put away in the closet for now) and it has made a big difference. Even if LO takes out all of his toys, it still only takes 5 minutes to put everything away. And he's been totally cool with it. If he asks for something specifically, I'll go dig it out of the storage box, but for the most part he's content with what he has and actually likes having less clutter around.

@gingerbebe: we use tons of Clorox wipes too, best invention ever! I didn't think about the baseboards, that sounds like a great idea! And moving a toy box to the living room would be so helpful too, I feel like there's always crap strewn about that I'm dragging back to his room.

We don't have a Shark, but we have a Hoover Floor Mate and it makes doing the floors so much easier!

@cyndistar3: agh yes. I cleaned up the kitchen only for DS to manage to dump baking powder all over the place (we keep a box in the fridge and he thought it'd be fun to make it snow).

@Ms. RV: I think a list might hep it to seem less overwhelming. Honestly, as long as the clutter is kept at bay, the floors in decent shape, and dishes/laundry relatively under control, I'm content. I hate clutter, it gives me anxiety.

Same boat. The only real "thing" I do is that I have wipes for everything. Granite wipes, stainless steel wipes, Old English furniture wipes, etc.

I keep a giant canister of Lysol wipes on the island and just wipe down the table, kitchen surfaces, and stovetop and microwave whenever I think of it throughout the day and after I'm done with each wipe, I drop it on the floor and wipe up a small area with my foot before tossing it.

I keep a DustBuster charged on our counter and run it in corners or on DS' play rug and splat mat to keep up with crumbs after meals or snacks. I love the Clorox duster wipes to run over surfaces really fast - especially baseboards. I use Windex wipes for the bathroom mirrors and keep more Lysol wipes in every bathroom. Makes keeping up with the toilets and sinks easier. Tilex spray the shower every night after last person showers. Clorox extra thick toilet gel squirted in the bowl pretty much cleans the inside of the toilet itself.

I'll sweep the kitchen and then hand my husband the Swiffer wet wipes to clean the floors. I'll try to run my Shark steam mop every so often but sometimes Swiffer is what happens. Vacuuming happens once a week or so - it's just what we can manage.

We do laundry nonstop - DH and I keep a darks and whites hamper set in the hall next to the laundry room and as soon as one is reasonably full, it goes in and we've made it a habit to check the washer or dryer whenever we walk by. Clean laundry gets dumped on our bed so it has to get folded before we go to sleep.

We keep one big toy chest in the living room and everything get thrown in there every night after DS goes to bed. Most of the toys just live there. Dishes get done at night and run before we go to sleep.

I am trying to figure this out too. I am struggling with not having everything clean at the same time. I tried to split up chores this week and just felt like there was always something still messy. For laundry I have learned to leave things in the basket for a few days until I can fold it. Especially when it comes to DS's clothes. There are only so many hours in a day!

No great advice, but I can share in your pain. I feel like I spend all of my day cooking and cleaning. It never ends! Try to get your SO more involved so that you don't feel so overwhelmed. I'm working on that right now, but it's difficult with DH trying to get into grad school and house renovations going on around the house.

In the past, I've had a schedule. I made a list of all the things that need done (i.e., clean countertops, mop floors, etc. as opposed to just clean the kitchen) and figured out how often to do them and when to do them. When I had a whole list I could visualize it gave me much better direction and cleaning house didn't feel impossible.

This sounds like the story of my life, I feel so defeated at times because once I get one thing done and start the next all efforts of the first thing is already being destroyed... the only time I keep my house decent is if I never stop moving... lol

@Applesandbananas: are you making sure you and your husband are equally splitting the duties? I would sit down and make a list of all the things that have been done and how frequently, and then assign them. It will lessen the burden to know that only half the chores fall under your responsibility and hopefully make the task of keeping the house clean less overwhelming. Maybe agree that you'll both work on house work for 45 minutes each night right after LO goes to bed so you are in it together and helping each other stay accountable to being on top of things.

It's tough. We don't outsource any of our cleaning and my husband works long hours so it's typically on me. Plus I'm a SAHM so I feel like I'm constantly cleaning or picking up all day. When we are home, we just make one mess after another.

I guess the only thing I do that kinda keeps things in control is doing laundry constantly (but it doesn't get folded on time). I try to load the dishwasher throughout the day and run it at bedtime. I clean parts of the bathroom every day so it's not a huge ordeal (ex, toilets one day, tub another). That way it's just five minutes rather than hours.

LO is also really good about putting away his toys and putting his dishes in the sink, laundry in the hamper. He wipes down surfaces too.

I try to prioritize a few specific cleaning tasks and don't worry about putting toys away until the end of the day. Toys out everywhere isn't gross to me like a dirty floor or bathroom. Not that my floors and bathroom are always clean! But basically I don't do a lot of deep cleaning, just vacuuming as much as I can handle (we have dark wood floors and it really should be done 2-3 times a week but once is good for now :silly: ) and I try to keep the bathroom clean. For the bathroom - I can wipe down the sink and clean the toilet in about 10 minutes. The bathtub has needed to be cleaned for um prob 2 months now but it's not gross-dirty like a toilet.

I don't really bother picking up toys til the end of the day, my husband usually does that as I'm putting the baby to bed. But I also think toy-pick up is pretty manageable here bc 1) our daughter is only one so doesn't do harder to clean-up stuff yet (like arts&crafts stuff), and 2) we really don't have that many toys. So maybe pare down your toys if it seems like that might help?

We also have a small house so that helps!

I know how you feel though, we toyed recently with the idea of getting a cleaning service but I can't justify the expense when I think we keep our house acceptably clean without much effort. I would just like a service to do the stuff that I never get around to (like that tub...).

ETA: All kitchen related cleaning I just do as I go so stuff is never piled up. And our kitchen is tiny so I can wipe down the counters in like 2 seconds.

Oh! And LO1 is really getting good at cleaning up toys. It helps that they are sorted by bins and we don't have too many out at once. He is also pretty good with a spray bottle of water and vinegar and a rag. This is good on all hard surfaces and glass. LO helps pick up laundry, put trash and dishes where they belong, etc

How do you keep the mess under control? I feel like I've been doing nothing but laundry and vacuuming and dishes and picking up toys and wiping down tables and don't even get me started on the state of the bathroom with a sort of potty trained boy 😷

I try to have LO help somewhat (he likes the stick vacuum and to wipe the tables, he'll help pick up toys, etc.) but some days he just goes from room to room, making mess after mess.

I'm so tired and I feel like this weekend sucked because it was just a ton of cleaning and my house is still gross feeling (I didn't get to run the floor cleaner or clean the bathroom).

I feel like I do stuff during the week, like tossing a load of laundry in most days, loading the dishwasher, etc., but it still feels like it's all piled up on the weekend.

Any advice other than hiring a cleaning person (not in the budget, not something we think is realistic right now)?
