@ShootingStar: yep, my son has had 2 mild ear infections his entire life and you would never think he couldn’t hear properly. He always responded to everything and our families were shocked he had conductive hearing loss. Even his SLP was surprised! But basically the audiologist described him as hearing like he had water in his ears at all times...which made me feel horrible but again, so glad we kept at it. Once he had the surgery he could enunciate his words and finish the sounds at the end of words, which he couldn’t do before. This is our first winter after and no snoring, a couple mild colds. Nothing like before. We also had feeding issues with him and nearly went to a feeding clinic (it improved over time as well) Keep pushing! It took 4 failed tests, 2 of which he was not sick before or during, before he finally met whatever arbitrary criteria the ENT had.

@muffinsmuffins: This is totally my son too. He’s sounds like he’s snoring even when he’s awake, his tonsils are gigantic and he’s constantly gagging on food, and he’s failed hearing test after hearing test due to fluid in his ears.

So far the ENT keeps wanting to have him come back in every few weeks because he doesn’t really get ear infections, even with the constant fluid back up. But we have another appointment next month, after a year and a half of this, and I think it’s time we take more serious steps.

@MrsADS: FWIW, I was very nervous and scared about the surgery even though we really wanted to get it done. I even had to talk it out with my therapist! But I have no regrets whatsoever and it went really well. It did have to be done at the children’s hospital under general anesthesia but it was one of the best things we’ve ever done for him. I am so thankful we did it before he began school and the recovery was like 3 days over a long weekend.

Our issues were more about long term speech problems as the other stuff did get better over the months/years. I think that’s why it’s hard for these specialists to do so many tests/procedures, etc on young kids because sometimes they actually do improve as their bodies mature. At 3.5 though, if things are still miserable I wouldn’t hesitate to rule it out.

@MrsADS: the earliest our allergist would consider shots was 4.5, and later if they were not super verbal, so that they could be expected to communicate if they felt a reaction. So definitely just something to keep in your back pocket if nothing else helps.

Thanks everyone!

@muffinsmuffins wow that sounds just like us, actually. This winter has been 1000x worse than any previously. I don't want him to have surgery, but I definitely think an ENT consult could be helpful. I don't know for sure that his irritability/crankiness are due to being tired because he's not sleeping well with snoring/congestion, it's just my theory. But I think it's likely.

@jess1483 my husband and I both have horrible allergies and we're both on allergy shots, so he definitely gets it from us!

@bhbee yeah IDK allergist vs. ENT, interesting to think about! I hate to do shots, though, although maybe when he's a bit older.

@lioneyes yeah, OTC antihistamines have been basically useless for us.

We saw an allergist, did all the tests and saw he’s allergic to 2 trees that bloom in Spring summer and fall. So once the season starts, he takes Claritin or Zyrtec and we try to get him to take the Flonase spray nasally but rarely successfully. I don’t love it as a solution bc it doesn’t really work but i don’t think there’s anything else we can do. He already has tubes and his ENT wants us to wait and see about adenoids and tonsils.

We started seeing an allergist at 3 for my oldest. We tried all the rx stuff but it only made a small dent so we started shots at 4.5 and it has been a HUGE help. It’s not fun to do, but it’s pretty successful in many kids and can make a big difference in one season. If you think it’s allergy based I would see an allergist vs ENT but both may be helpful.

For her it also changed behavior and she was always tired. She also had the super dark eyes and in tree season they could swell almost shut. I don’t even know if it kept her up at night I think she just felt horrible all the time. It was a huge quality of life issue. It even exacerbated a speech issue she had. Pretty much the day the worst allergy season for her ended it started improving again. And we know others with similar success. I get shots too but improvement is slower in adults.

She’s 7 now and we’re almost done probably (monthly shots for 3 years after initial buildup is their recommendation). The nice thing about shots is it can really cure the underlying issue vs just treat symptoms.

We saw a pediatric ENT originally for mouth breathing, snoring and constant congestion. Diagnosed with enlarged adenoids and probably needing tubes, possibly super small eustation (sp?) tubes causing fluid build up. They tried Flonase spray for a bit which did nothing. We had multiple hearing tests where he alllllways had fluid even when he wasn’t sick and poor results on one side or both every time. Our ENT drove us nuts over 2.5 years ‘waiting and seeing’ until finally on his 4th failed hearing test he had tube surgery and adenoidectomy last summer. GAME CHANGER. His speech improved drastically and we’ve had way less congestion/sickness. The mouth breathing did improve over time before surgery and they said his adenoids weren’t too bad (probably because surgery was put off foreverrrr) In the end, I am so glad we saw the ENT and in your case I absolutely would. Your son sounds 1000% more miserable than my kid ever was (ours was not allergy related of course) but at this point I would try anything if I was you. If they say there’s nothing to be done, fine but at least you’re ruling out other options.

I haven’t actually taken my son to the allergist (also 3.5, his allergies are linked to asthma), but I did talk to my allergist briefly at my last appointment (he comes by it honestly), about how they approach allergy treatment for kids. Just hearing him talk have me so much confidence that he knew what he was talking about and could help get DS on a comprehensive plan that makes sense. I’m not sure if I’d feel exactly the same with the high congestion vs asthma, but I wonder if that might also be something you’d want to consider. Although I love love love my pediatrician, I often saw other doctors when he needed to be seen, and it just felt like we were treating event to event instead of looking at the whole picture.

Just another thought!

Hi all -
My 3.5yo has always had allergies/congestion, but this winter it has been especially bad (we are in Florida, and this is our "allergy season"). He has been congested/sick since October, even after 2 courses of antibiotics. We had him on Claritin for a long time but it did nothing. He has dark circles under his eyes (allergy shiners).

He seems very tired a lot of the time and is extremely irritable - like constant tantrums and screaming, even though he's sleeping at night and he has an early bedtime. He snores a lot. I am thinking maybe he wakes up several times through the night due to his congestion/allergies and that is making him tired and irritable.

We were back at the pediatrician again on Saturday, and she prescribed Singulair for him. She feels like it might make a difference. She said it may shrink his adenoids and help the congestion. We have tried Flonase, but I can't get it in his nose (have to pin him down to do it, he screams and fights, it is basically impossible).

I am wondering if we should be seeing a pediatric ENT for a consult at this point? Has anyone done that and if so, what did they try?

I feel so bad for him because he's been kind of miserable for months, and I am getting seriously depressed/having a hard time coping due to his behavior.
