@RubyCali: Funny you should ask! I had to take one today! I take 1 (not 2, like I used to) when I REALLY need it. But I try to take some kind of supplements (Fenugreek or More Milk Plus) to hopefully counteract any drying up. And I chug a TON of water. So far it's been OK. Even if I feel a small dip, it hasn't dried up and baby doesn't seem affected.

@shopaholic: Sudafed can be used to dry up your milk for good, and I think it does dry most people out to some degree. Some women recover, some don't. I'm suffering through my second Oregon summer without it - I took it while I was pregnant, but I won't risk a drop in supply.

When I was breastfeeding, I took Claritin (recommended by our peds) or Zyrtec (rec'd by other peds, one we weren't fond of). Claritin helped way more than Zyrtec.

My skin has been itching like crazy and I was wondering where it was from... I was thinking crazy stuff like bed bugs!! But my husband is fine so it can't be that. Now that you mention it related to allergies, I think that could be it. My nose and sinuses are KILLING me.

I still don't want to risk taking antihistamines, but thanks for clearing up my confusion about my terrible skin!

@shopaholic: I took it before bed and the next morning my breasts felt EMPTY and DS was getting very fussy when he would try to nurse. My supply was back to normal within a few days but I know of some women who basically had to try to re -lactate after taking sudafed.

Now I just use a neti pot and take ibuprofen for any nasal swelling.

I took Zyrtec three days ago and I totally had a dip in my (one) daily pumping output that night. I didn't realize that the two things could be related. My pumping output is a little better today.

@78h2o: @coacheswife123: Claritin doesn't do anything for my allergies. :( I think it doesn't do anything to relieve any itching.

@Navy_Mommy: Thanks. How long before you noticed the Sudafed effect? And if you stopped the Sudafed, did your supply go back to normal? I'm wondering if I take one or two doses and something happens to my supply, if it would affect it long-term/permanently?

@Ree723: I know it's safe and I did take in during pregnancy, but I'm scared about the supply issue. But thanks!

I have a prescription for Rhinocourt nasal spray and that's perfectly safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding. I have been using it for a couple of years and never noticed a drop in supply.

I don't think it hurt my supply, though my LC said she wasn't crazy about it (but then mumbled something about it being sedating - so maybe that's why she didn't like it?). She recommended Claritin (and said it shouldn't affect supply), but I tried it and sort of thought that it was affecting my supply, so I don't know! I'm interested to see what other people say!

Anyone take Benedryl while BFing? Did you notice a decrease in your milk supply (as rumored)?

KellyMom says "Milk supply: A common concern is that the sedating antihistamines might lower milk supply but, per Dr. Thomas Hale, there is no current research supporting this belief – only some anecdotal reports."

My unbearable allergies are starting up and these are the kinds that causes my SKIN to itch like crazy but from the inside-out, if that makes sense. Years of experience, and basically only Benerdryl does this trick. But I've been scared to take any just yet - so scratching away at my face (eyes and lips, etc.)
