I would just move the beds against the wall if you're worried about LO rolling out or maybe makeshift barriers with pillows or a rolled up blanket underneath the sheets.

When my LO2 was almost two, he refused travel crib. We put him in the bed with us at the hotel and literally it was the worst bc he kept climbing down the bed and walking around. Seriously crazy night. But it's just temporary while traveling so you do what you gotta do.

My littles have slept is all different kinds of places while we travel and it's been fine. I would be prepared for him not to stay in the bed when he is sleeping so make sure the room is safe. My LOs roll all over the room if not contained in the crib, i would up them back when i got up in the night, or they woke (my almost 2 year old still wakes often....)

@Amorini: could you take the mattress and put it on the floor? We have done that with our toddlers when traveling. It removes the concern of rolling out and a toddler bed is a crib mattress typically in a bed frame instead of a crib frame so the size would be familiar.

@Amorini: oh- and I’m thinking of the rail more from a comfort perspective, since he sleeps well with four sides in a crib, not so much a safety thing. Toddler beds are low enough and he’s old enough that I don’t think it would be unsafe to have no rail.

@Madison43: That’s a good idea! I have seen that type of long pillow thing that you can buy, but DIY is good too!

@Foodnerd81: Thanks! I think I might be Priming some options like that one to my parent’s house and have some back-up plans.

@Amorini: so I never actually used a bed rail, or toddler bed for that matter... but aren’t they pretty universal? I was thinking for the toddler bed you could just pop the rail on the side to make it more enclosed.

This one says it works for a twin or crib mattress.

@Amorini: I make make-shift bed rails when we travel all the time by stuffing pillows under the fitted sheet. It creates enough of a barrier that they don’t roll off. I wouldn’t do it with a younger baby but am confirmation for a toddler.

@Mrs. Turtle: That’s funny that she just decided she liked the “grown-up” bed better. I’m not too worried we are there yet, but good to keep in mind.

@Becky: Yeah, I guess that’s the way I’m thinking about it.

@Foodnerd81: Do you mean a rail for the toddler bed or the regular/my bed? I didn’t know they made rails for toddler beds but that’s a good idea. It might also be a good idea to have a rail that fits the adult bed, on DH’s side since DH won’t be there. Hmmm...off to google.

Or possibly you could rent an actual crib locally. But it doesn’t sound worth it to me.

It doesn’t sound ideal but if he refused the travel crib last time, he probably will again anyway. I would do what you are suggesting too. Do you have a rail for the bed so it feels more like a crib? Worst case you could buy a cheap travel crib there anyway.

It’s worth trying it if you don’t have to bring a porta crib. And then if he ends up sleeping with you nbd. That’s honestly what we do when sleeping away and thankfully they tend to do okay in the beds.

We did it involuntarily with a twin in the hospital at that age. Worked fine, but she hasn't slept in a crib since. She refused when we got home and has been in a twin ever since. But she is particularly strong willed and it probably would've been an early transition anyway because she would've climbed out.

We will be at my parents over Labor Day which involves a flight. I don’t want to pack the travel crib for DS (almost 2!) because last vacation, which was 4 weeks ago, he didn’t use it at all. We room-shared in the hotel and we let him sleep between DH and me to keep the peace. It was the first time that he has refused the travel crib. At home he is a peaceful crib sleeper.

So I am thinking on this short trip he could just use the toddler bed that is already at our destination. My mom has a toddler bed from all the other grandkids and I’m thinking of just using that without covers. DS sleeps in a Flying Squirrel (footed wearable blanket). We will room-share but this way he has his own bed...if he even uses it.

Does this sound like a good idea? At home, I wouldn’t think of a toddler bed quite yet, but while away for a few days, I wonder how that might work.

ETA: I thought I should add that DH won’t be traveling with us. I don’t really like bed-sharing with DS (vacation was a first), but I realize that it might happen whether I like it or not. It wasn’t bad when he slept between DH and me, but without DH there, I feel even more insecure about it. That’s what led to the toddler bed idea.
