Thanks for the input bees! I had assumed that people would have this reaction, so it is good to confirm. I suspect that if we have a girl and if we go with this name we'll go with the traditional spelling.

Also glad to hear so many of you like the name

I like the alternate spelling, especially if it goes with the alternate pronunciation. I also like that you got it from a trip that you took together

I grew up with an easily misspelled name, so it's not really a big deal to me. For our #2 we are going with an alternate spelling (an older version) of a more traditional name. The spelling was my husband's deal breaker for the name, since I love the name and am used to it for myself, it wasn't really a big deal.

Really, people are going to try to misspell every name out there no matter how carefully planned- with our #1, we are constantly being asked if it's spelled C or K, I laugh and say the traditional spelling (C) :silly:

My goddaughter / niece is named Julia so I am partial to the traditional spelling (and it is a beautiful name). Plus, I have to spell out my last name 100% of the time and I would hate it so much more to have to do that with my first name.

Are you Belgian? If not I think it seems like way more trouble than it is worth. If it is pronounced Julia just spell it Julia.... Adding the second J will complicate things so much.

I think I'd stick with the traditional spelling. Although I like the use of the j in the middle to make the "y" sound, If I were reading the name I would assume that both j's make the same sound making the name Yu-Lee-Ya.

If you were Belgian and it was part of your cultural heritage to spell it that way, that'd be one thing. But if you're just doing it to be different, I'd spell it Julia.

Definitely the normal way! If you two were like… FROM Belgium then I'd maybe say okay because that is the traditional way for you. But I think without that super strong connection it would be way too much trouble for your LO to explain the odd spelling every. single. time. she gave her name.

I say traditional.

Dh & I also have talked about the name Julia for a girl and we have a very common boring last name! In fact dd's name is even shorter and still fairly traditional even with our boring name and yet we love it. You don't need to spell it different. Great choice!

I think it's a nice name but probably makes the most sense in its original cultural context...as in, Belgians are used to reading that spelling but Americans won't know what to do with it.

I love the name Julia and am totally cool with alternate spellings in general, but I do think most Americans will be confused when reading the name with that spelling, and forget about people being able to remember/spell it correctly. What about a "y"? Julya? Juliya?

I would immediately think the extra J was a typo and at worst I would call her Julie Ja as in Ja Rule.

My name is an alternative spelling for a very common name and 99.99% pronounce it the right way, but it's still such a headache. Stick with Traditional.

I had a challenging last name and gave up on correcting people on pronounciation. And I often gave up on how to spell it correctly too (it violates the i before e rule). Therefore, I say go traditional.

Honestly, I don't like it at all as Julija, never mind that the majority of Americans will not pronounce it correctly and always write it wrong.
I think it is a BEAUTIFUL and classic name and the spelling should def stay the way it traditionally is.

For what it's worth: id pronounce it JOO-LEE-HA because i'd take the "j" has the same "j" in the Latino boy's name: Jose.

Since we aren't sharing name ideas with anyone IRL, DH has been bugging me to ask the bees about this one...

We are team green and love the name Julia for a girl. When we were traveling in Belgium last year we saw it spelled Julija. We both love this variant as much if not more than the traditional spelling.

However, we generally hate alternative spellings of common names and we are concerned that she would spend her whole life having her name misspelled and always have to spell it for people.

Some other info for context - we have a really, really common last name. I have a very unusual first name and have spent my whole life spelling and repeating my name - overall I really like my name, get lots of compliments on it and I definitely don't hate my parent for it

So bees, what do you think?
